Introduction:
If you haven't read Cable's guide on how to make a demo, read his guide to get a better understanding of what this is:
http://forum.randomgs.com/index.php/topic,5464.0.html
Ever wanted to make .dem files into .avi files for YouTube purposes? Ever wanted to make your report a little better without downloading .dem files? This guide can teach you how to convert .dem files to .avi files to use for YouTube or use it for other purposes(reports, etc.)
Step 1:
Go to Garry's Mod, review any of your recorded demos that you want to convert as .avi.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 2:
Go to console, type in "startmovie yourmoviename". Name your movie anything that you wish.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Then type in "playdemo yourdemname" so the demo can be recorded to the movie.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 3:
The frames will go slow, but its ok, the source engine is processing every frame one by one.
Step 4:
Once the recording is done, type in console "endmovie". Exit Garry's Mod, then go to your Garry's Mod folder, and you should see this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Every Frame from the demo was captured and place in your Garry's Mod folder, so as the sound was also recorded.
Step 5:
You need to install a program called virtualdub:
http://www.virtualdub.org/
VirtualDub will help you process the frames and turn it into an .avi file.
Proceed onto the next step on how to install virtualdub.
Step 5a:
First, click on downloads in the left side of the page:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 5b:
Then, click on VirtualDub at SourceForge:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 5c:
Download either version bit do you have(if you have the 32bit windows version, download the 32bit version, if you have the 64bit windows version, download the 64bit version.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 6:
Once installation is finished, open up VirtualDub:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 7:
Now go to your Garry's Mod folder where the frames are.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Where it says "yourmoviename0000" or your first frame which 0000 at the end of the title(not 0001), drag the first frame to the VirtualDub program and put the frame in the blank space.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now all the frames after 0000(ex: 0001, 0002, etc.)are in the VirtualDub program.
Step 7a:
Now go to the Audio Tab on the top of the page, select Audio from other file....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Once you click that, you need to find the matching audio of the video(the name is the same as the title of the processed video):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 7b:
Now go to the Video Tab and select Frame Rate...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Choose: Change so video and audio durations match, this will make the audio and video match when the .avi is compiled.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 7c:
Go back to the Video Tab and select Compression.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Select a compression that you want to use, I tend to use Intel since my videos compile great with intel, but if you want to test compressions to see which looks better, mess around the compressions you have and/or download compressions. Installed compressions depends on what computer do you have.
Step 8:
Go to the File Tab, and select Save as AVI...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You can save it anywhere but its recommended to save in your video folder.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 8a:
After you saved it, a window will pop up saying how long is the file going to be compressed depending how many frames you recorded.
Step 9:
Once the compression the .avi file is created, but we are not done, the .avi is a little corrupted but it can be played and it has a lot of memory in it, time to go to step 10.
Step 10:
You need to install another program called Format Factory:
http://format-factory.en.softonic.com/
This program will help you convert not just video files, but music and picture files. I recommend this program, I tend to use this when I put videos up on YouTube. Proceed onto the next step for installation instructions.
Step 10a:
Click on Free Download:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 10b:
Save the file anywhere. Follow the installation instructions.
Step 11:
Once you installed Format Factory, go to Format Factory.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Once at Format Factory, click on All to AVI to fix the AVI file.
Step 11a:
Click on Add File:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Find your AVI file:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Once you find your AVI file, click Ok.
Step 12:
Where it says Start next to Option, Click it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Your video will be converting to a fixed .avi file.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 13:
Once its done, a new folder will be added called: AVI. Go to the folder:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Step 14:
Congratulations, the .avi file reduced its size and you can upload it to YouTube a lot quicker than before.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I hope this tutorial helps. If you think there's an error or problem in this tutorial, tell me and I will fix it. Thank you cable for your .dem guide.
Remember to yellow when I kill you.

That is one method, but if you have codecs, you CAN record directly into AVI - or rather, you COULD - I heard steam cut out AVI support.

IF you have no issue with non=AVI format, you can use other codecs and get outputs in different formats I *BELIEVE* [don't quote me on this YET].

If you have quicktime, you CAN use the h264 codecs - which, on a Mac, I am forced to use - with the resulting output being an MP4 [720P].

ALSO, if not noted before, do note things like:

- How in demo playback, if recording TTT, you need to click the buttons for the Detective/Traitor upgrades, and how if you hold down tab to see the player list in game while recording a demo, it will do that in the playback on its own [and how using txtchat doesn't show the box/record-ee typing into the box, just the output in case anybody questions why that is so].

ALSO, I would recommend a naming convention to make it easy to find demos if you record a LOT of demos.

I use:
"dem_[gamemode]_[mapname]_[date in MM-DD-YY]_[timestamp in HH:MM[AM|PM]"

but whatever you use works too.

Not really worth a bump. Just tell him personally.

Take for example the other TTT help one.

It was already buried and nobody has actually posted in it nor looked at it in a while. If you put something like "Updated OP with a few more things. Bump" Then it would be acceptable. Not responding to two month old comments which probably won't be looked at anymore.

Thing is, you just came back, and those are the first things you do. Trying to stop it before it goes overboard.
