Introduction:
If you haven't read Cable's guide on how to make a demo, read his guide to get a better understanding of what this is:
http://forum.randomgs.com/index.php/topic,5464.0.html (http://forum.randomgs.com/index.php/topic,5464.0.html)
Ever wanted to make .dem files into .avi files for YouTube purposes? Ever wanted to make your report a little better without downloading .dem files? This guide can teach you how to convert .dem files to .avi files to use for YouTube or use it for other purposes(reports, etc.)
Step 1:
Go to Garry's Mod, review any of your recorded demos that you want to convert as .avi.
Step 2:
Go to console, type in "startmovie yourmoviename". Name your movie anything that you wish.
Then type in "playdemo yourdemname" so the demo can be recorded to the movie.
Step 3:
The frames will go slow, but its ok, the source engine is processing every frame one by one.
Step 4:
Once the recording is done, type in console "endmovie". Exit Garry's Mod, then go to your Garry's Mod folder, and you should see this:
Every Frame from the demo was captured and place in your Garry's Mod folder, so as the sound was also recorded.
Step 5:
You need to install a program called virtualdub:
http://www.virtualdub.org/ (http://www.virtualdub.org/)
VirtualDub will help you process the frames and turn it into an .avi file.
Proceed onto the next step on how to install virtualdub.
Step 5a:
First, click on downloads in the left side of the page:
Step 5b:
Then, click on VirtualDub at SourceForge:
Step 5c:
Download either version bit do you have(if you have the 32bit windows version, download the 32bit version, if you have the 64bit windows version, download the 64bit version.
Step 6:
Once installation is finished, open up VirtualDub:
Step 7:
Now go to your Garry's Mod folder where the frames are.
Where it says "yourmoviename0000" or your first frame which 0000 at the end of the title(not 0001), drag the first frame to the VirtualDub program and put the frame in the blank space.
Now all the frames after 0000(ex: 0001, 0002, etc.)are in the VirtualDub program.
Step 7a:
Now go to the Audio Tab on the top of the page, select Audio from other file....
Once you click that, you need to find the matching audio of the video(the name is the same as the title of the processed video):
Step 7b:
Now go to the Video Tab and select Frame Rate...
Choose: Change so video and audio durations match, this will make the audio and video match when the .avi is compiled.
Step 7c:
Go back to the Video Tab and select Compression.
Select a compression that you want to use, I tend to use Intel since my videos compile great with intel, but if you want to test compressions to see which looks better, mess around the compressions you have and/or download compressions. Installed compressions depends on what computer do you have.
Step 8:
Go to the File Tab, and select Save as AVI...
You can save it anywhere but its recommended to save in your video folder.
Step 8a:
After you saved it, a window will pop up saying how long is the file going to be compressed depending how many frames you recorded.
Step 9:
Once the compression the .avi file is created, but we are not done, the .avi is a little corrupted but it can be played and it has a lot of memory in it, time to go to step 10.
Step 10:
You need to install another program called Format Factory:
http://format-factory.en.softonic.com/ (http://format-factory.en.softonic.com/)
This program will help you convert not just video files, but music and picture files. I recommend this program, I tend to use this when I put videos up on YouTube. Proceed onto the next step for installation instructions.
Step 10a:
Click on Free Download:
Step 10b:
Save the file anywhere. Follow the installation instructions.
Step 11:
Once you installed Format Factory, go to Format Factory.
Once at Format Factory, click on All to AVI to fix the AVI file.
Step 11a:
Click on Add File:
Find your AVI file:
Once you find your AVI file, click Ok.
Step 12:
Where it says Start next to Option, Click it.
Your video will be converting to a fixed .avi file.
Step 13:
Once its done, a new folder will be added called: AVI. Go to the folder:
Step 14:
Congratulations, the .avi file reduced its size and you can upload it to YouTube a lot quicker than before.
