It's impossible to crack a pre-release like that without a functional executable.

The only way there would be a working crack was if

A. Leaked functional copy of the game has been acquired by a scene team.
B. The code was compromised.
C. You have a quantum computer capable of performing all the algorithms to "guess" the code.

If you're not BSing, the "Crack" you're seeing is either a trojan, or a crack for the demo.

What's the big deal about him having a crack or not?

There's been plenty of games that have been cracked before they got released. It's not like they just finish the game the second it's released, it's really easy to acquire a proper copy of the game before release. Especially seeing as most scene groups have people working in stores and such.
