Is Garry’s Mod coming out for Mac?

I get at least 3 emails a day asking this. I’ve answered it everywhere. Yes – it is. I do not know when.

What’s the hold up? Come on we want it!

I’m working on it! The plan is to release the engine update on the PC first, to make sure all is well – then we’ll work on compiling it for Mac.

New engine? Cool? What’s new?

There isn’t that much new stuff. There’s one major new feature but I don’t know whether it works yet because it isn’t in any of Valve’s games and I haven’t played with it. We should get some performance and bug fixes though. Maybe multicore rendering.

Multicore rendering? Lua isn’t threaded – GMod can’t use it!

I don’t get why people keep telling me this. It’s bullshit. The majority of the Source Engine isn’t threaded either. The rendering is.

I don’t really understand the people that contact me thinking that having multicore rendering in GMod will make it run 4 times faster. It won’t. In 99% of situations it’s your graphics card that is making GMod slow – not your CPU.

Upgraded requirements?

I don’t think so.

Is this GMod 12?

Technically, yes. There aren’t any new amazing features though. Since GMod went retail on Steam (GMod 10) I’ve incremented the version every engine upgrade.

I saw that lawl, also Source engine is getting updated, look at the Portal 2 trailer, Source engine will start being realistic lmao

That means there'll probably be TF3 and a new CS.
They didn't make a CS beta for nothing.

Umm....guys, this an engine update ONLY for Gmod, though there will be an engine update when Portal 2 comes out, and then also HL3, TF3, CS:s2 and stuff like that will most probably come out too =D

Garry has just posted new information on his blog about the coming engine update. If all goes well, we can all enjoy it on Monday next week. With such a big update you would expect problems to occur, but during the beta testing period no big issues were encountered, which is a great thing.

The biggest new thing in this update is multicore rendering. Earlier some people worried about the advantage of it, but it proves to boost the framerate noticeably in common situations, like when dealing with a lot of props.

Changelist

Improved server browser
Webkit based HTML control, just like the Steam one!
Multicore rendering
Novint Falcon support!
Steam Cloud
Think about your saves!

Since this is an engine update, make sure you don’t have any vital saves laying around, because there is a possibility they will break! If you wish to finish something after Monday, make sure you’ve turned off automatic updates.

if you think about it Garry inst switching engines he uses the tf2 engine already hes just updating it also he is compiling mac dlls for Garry's mod so no sudden changes.
