What I would do first on the very first day: Secure a shelter in a logical location; Preferably a large open area that is fenced off, or a warehouse.

I would gather these materials: Food, Transportation, and Ammunition

My weapons and gears would be:
- AR-15 (Primary assault rifle)
- FS2000 (CQB Secondary assault rifle)
- Five-seveN (Personal Sidearm)
- SOG Tech Bowie (Knife)
- Harness/vest
- Trauma kit (bandages, morphine, etc)
- Cyanide Capsule

What I'd would do for day one:
Barricade all doors and windows. Have my shotgun and machete ready if any come in. Make a fallback position. Finally, attempt to make as little noise as humanly possible (eg only use shotgun in absolute dire emergency)

What I would gather: Small handgun side arms, primary weapons for the rest of the group (I already have a shotgun and a bolt action rifle), bikes, canned food, a crapton of water filters, heavy boots, heavy duty backpacks, first aid kits, flares or signaling mirrors, and,if possible, a thin Kevlar body suit (not a bullet proof jacket)

What weapons and gear:

- secondary: Mossberg Mavrick pump action shotgun
- side arm: glock 19

First of all, staying in one place is stupid. As long as they know you're there, assuming the majority of the vox populi is now zombies. What I would do first on the very first day is get my mom's Ford Expedition, get a bunch of my friends (one of which has a lot of guns), and loot a Home Depot, making sure to make DIY silencers first, if all the tools in Home Depot don't suffice. Only as a last resort, though, because using something as loud as  jackhammer would attarct a lot of zombies. From there, we journey to Las Vegas in the car to meet all of you guys.

I would gather these materials:
Steel wool/plastic bottles (to make silencers)
Canned food
Water

My weapons and gears would be:
-Whatever we could get in Home Depot, which would include axes, sledgehammers, and crowbars
-Whatever guns my friend has

What I would do first on the very first day:

Secure all weapons and ammunition, and locate a gated community with high walls. Find a rugged vehicle, a small, fuel efficient vehicle, and as much fuel as possible.

I would gather these materials:

Food, common types of ammunition, a generator (or two), a rugged vehicle, and fuel

My weapons and gears would be:

A large caliber pistol.
A small caliber rifle (whatever i have the most ammunition of)
A heavy, blunt object.

My goal for the future:

1. Secure materials and manpower.
2. Secure a small gated community. Preferably with high walls and sturdy gates.
3. Kill everything in that gated community. Survivors may be infected or pose a threat -- they must prove that they can be useful or we will kick them out.
4. Toughen up the community, gather all supplies in a central area and institute command structure.
5. Secure lubrication.
6. Set up raids in which members of the community venture out to eliminate zombies.
7. Expand.
8. Construct additional pylons.
9. Once enough of the city has been reclaimed, and enough manpower amassed, parties will be sent out to major urban centers to attract more people, as well as to kill zombies.
10. Secure any industrial source of power to run civilization.
10. I am now a god.

Why this works:

It is fucking las vegas. Zombies will rot in the midday sun, and numbers will stagnate quickly, making the initial hours of the outbreak the toughest. Game, set, fucking match.
