- you will never need more than 8gb of ram
- you will never need more than 2tb of storage, ever
- buy AMD's most expensive cpu and enjoy being the god of multi-tasking for less than $250
- buy as good of a GPU as you can get with the money left over
Let me refer you some shit.
RAM:

But gaming performance isn't as good as the average i5.  :-[

8 GB of ram will be obsolete in the future

but... the space... for certain files... found in the dark net  :-X

Standard ATX mobo
CPU, I suggest AMD for cost saving. (I've a Phenom x4 and never had problems)
Great budget GPU: Radeon HD 6770
8 GB RAM
7.1 Sound card

rounding to 100, 160, 100, 40, anywhere from 15-100 = ~450

salvage what you can from old PC: Case, HD (though a fresh OS install is recommended), Disk drives (bluray if enough $$)

intel only performs better than amd at gaming because game devs are fucking lazy and don't code for multi-threaded game engines

intel cpus have better single-threaded performance than amd which is useless for anything besides gaming at this point

as soon as devs pull their heads out of their asses and start coding multi-threaded engines intel will be in the shitter until they step it up

even then amd's best processor has never cost more than $250 as far as i know and intel is the king of overpricing

Ugh, AMD gave up on the desktop market a while ago after the failure of the Bulldozer, which is a real shame. Now all they sell is that A8 fusion crap that appeals to the laptop market, otherwise the CPU aspect of the APU preforms around the lines of an Athlon II or just barely scrapes ahead of the Phenoms.

Honestly, there is hardly a noticeable difference when it comes to an intel vs AMD in gaming. So might as well get an AMD.

OEM Phenom II x4 + Hyper 212+/EVO $100
8GB (2 x 4GB, you need to be able to upgrade for video editing.) 1333 RAM $30
ASUS Xonar DS 7.1 $40
Antec BP550w PSU $60
Radeon 7770 $120
1 TB 7200RPM HDD - $80
Rosewill Challenger ATX Case $60

Puts you around $10 under budget. You won't even need to salvage your case or HDD.

What. Lies. AMD has APU solutions for people who are broke, and piledriver FX solutions for people who do their video editing and graphics modeling. Also, the Phenom 2's weren't bad for gaming, a lot of people still buy them.

Intel beats AMD in gaming even with i5s.

I'm sure +20 FPS is noticeable, especially during large events. Also, this is their flagship model so far.

the only difference between the i5 and i7 is multi-threading

which makes no difference in gaming

they're literally the same fucking thing

I bet you nobody with an AMD CPU in their system also has the money to have a monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60.

2-4GB is pretty much the most you will need to play any game, 8 is overkill

If you want to +1 me then -1 me, if you want to -1 me then +1 me I want all the disrespect!

That's fucking stupid, he wont even use 12 GB even when gaming -.-
Unless he's doing editing.

6gb*
2-4GB is pretty much the most you will need to play any game, 8 is overkill

8 is the recommended amount of 2012

OEM Phenom II x4 + Hyper 212+/EVO $100
8GB (2 x 4GB, you need to be able to upgrade for video editing.) 1333 RAM $30
ASUS Xonar DS 7.1 $40
Antec BP550w PSU $60
Radeon 7770 $120
1 TB 7200RPM HDD - $80
Rosewill Challenger ATX Case $60

Puts you around $10 under budget. You won't even need to salvage your case or HDD.

an Intel Pentium is the better choice for gaming and cheaper(hard to believe, I know - they used to be the devils name), plus stock cooling will save money.

Taking a hit and guessing you're american, here comes newegggggg

Motherboard & CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1176555 $144.98
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148697 $84.99
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144  $46.99
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121120 (salvage if pos) $34.99
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162127 $134.99
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171046 $34.99
Total: 481$

if you don't get the case, upgrade GPU to AMD's 7850: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161426 $164.99

New Total: 483$

If you can push your budget, a blu-ray reader is 29$: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106325

Newer Total: 506$

Get the OS from areas of the net, etc etc.

The motherboard has 7.1 audio built in

Uh, I wouldn't say broke. I'd say just for people who want a multimedia, not solely gaming experience. Maybe some decent amount of gaming.
