Title: So I've got about 500$
Post by: Juan_Ambriz on January 02, 2013, 11:07:18 AM
My computer is starting to fail, I've had this baby for 4 Years.
By failing I mean like it keeps shutting down randomly the fan hum is really loud the graphics card seems to shutdown/fail/crash, and overall I feel like its time to upgrade.
So I'm asking what's a good computer I could get and/or parts to make one keep in mind I have a little over 500 to spend I can get  100$ more but it would take about another month lol

Basic needs

At least 1T of memory
At least 8GB Ram
At least 7.1 Audio Card

Optional
Bluray Player/Writer

That's fucking stupid, he wont even use 12 GB even when gaming -.-
Unless he's doing editing.

Are there any parts you can salvage?

I can salvage the HDD (1T) but I wanted to see if I can get a bigger size (2 or 3T) and the regular Disk Drive its a standard one though it doesn't support Blu-Ray

Also I have little to no knowledge on computer specs and such otherwise I wouldn't be asking for help :P

The use of this computer is Intence gaming and video editing/rendering (Sony Vegas)

Again there you go that bipolar snap against me Idk if you hate yourself or something but you should really work on that issue

And no it's not if he wants to run appilcations faster then sure 32gb may be over board but again he has 500$ and he wants to upgrade.

So yah please work on your little mental issues

You can't even salvage your case?
Do you need an OS?

It doesn't matter who started it,you should have kindly told him that Juan didin't need 32 gigs of RAM and if he still responded rudely, just ignore him.

But clearly since he himself said he will be doing some editing,it wouldn't hurt for some extra RAM.

As for saivon,i think you should be abit more respectful towards other people. This is a community, not a flaming zone.

I don't even think his board will be able to support 32GB of RAM... Go for 8, preferably from Corsair. You can easily get more if you feel that it's not as you wanted.

Then there's storage. Look at WD or Seagate. Both are quite reliable. If you're going for 1TB I suggest a 7200 RPM HDD.

As for the optional Blu Ray drive, I'm about to get one myself. I'm looking toward the LiteOn iHBS212. Well, that's what I can get in Australia. I'm sure you can find something better than that.

Something like this could work not including OS http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vA8E (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vA8E)

Without it, I would go with an APU http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vAal (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vAal)

- you will never need more than 8gb of ram
- you will never need more than 2tb of storage, ever
- buy AMD's most expensive cpu and enjoy being the god of multi-tasking for less than $250
- buy as good of a GPU as you can get with the money left over

But gaming performance isn't as good as the average i5.  :-[

8 GB of ram will be obsolete in the future

but... the space... for certain files... found in the dark net  :-X

Standard ATX mobo
CPU, I suggest AMD for cost saving. (I've a Phenom x4 and never had problems)
Great budget GPU: Radeon HD 6770
8 GB RAM
7.1 Sound card

rounding to 100, 160, 100, 40, anywhere from 15-100 = ~450

salvage what you can from old PC: Case, HD (though a fresh OS install is recommended), Disk drives (bluray if enough $$)

intel only performs better than amd at gaming because game devs are fucking lazy and don't code for multi-threaded game engines

intel cpus have better single-threaded performance than amd which is useless for anything besides gaming at this point

as soon as devs pull their heads out of their asses and start coding multi-threaded engines intel will be in the shitter until they step it up

even then amd's best processor has never cost more than $250 as far as i know and intel is the king of overpricing

Ugh, AMD gave up on the desktop market a while ago after the failure of the Bulldozer, which is a real shame. Now all they sell is that A8 fusion crap that appeals to the laptop market, otherwise the CPU aspect of the APU preforms around the lines of an Athlon II or just barely scrapes ahead of the Phenoms.

Honestly, there is hardly a noticeable difference when it comes to an intel vs AMD in gaming. So might as well get an AMD.

OEM Phenom II x4 + Hyper 212+/EVO $100
8GB (2 x 4GB, you need to be able to upgrade for video editing.) 1333 RAM $30
ASUS Xonar DS 7.1 $40
Antec BP550w PSU $60
Radeon 7770 $120
1 TB 7200RPM HDD - $80
Rosewill Challenger ATX Case $60

Puts you around $10 under budget. You won't even need to salvage your case or HDD.

What. Lies. AMD has APU solutions for people who are broke, and piledriver FX solutions for people who do their video editing and graphics modeling. Also, the Phenom 2's weren't bad for gaming, a lot of people still buy them.

Intel beats AMD in gaming even with i5s.

I'm sure +20 FPS is noticeable, especially during large events. Also, this is their flagship model so far.

the only difference between the i5 and i7 is multi-threading

which makes no difference in gaming

they're literally the same fucking thing

I bet you nobody with an AMD CPU in their system also has the money to have a monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60.

an Intel Pentium is the better choice for gaming and cheaper(hard to believe, I know - they used to be the devils name), plus stock cooling will save money.

Uh, I wouldn't say broke. I'd say just for people who want a multimedia, not solely gaming experience. Maybe some decent amount of gaming.

AMD is usually always cheaper then Intel for nearly the same performance but in terms of reliability I think they are pretty equal
