Most real RPG's are doomed. Now we have the short simplified stuff like Mass Effect. What a drag.
But as far as the "future" of the "mainstream" genre, I am kind of curious where it would lead.
So as you people should know: The adventure genere practicaly died at some recent point (though is returning somewhat). This death spanned roughly the release of Doom to the kickstarter event that really kickstarted Kickstarter. Eventualy something will become even more popular than the FPSes (and generic military shooter fad) we have now. What is your take on this?
I dont think the adventure genre is dead, it's just not called adventure anymore because it's pretty much intergrated into RPG's. But it really depends on what you consider adventure, is it free roam? Then:ZeldaTESFalloutSTALKERWitcher Just CauseOr a kind of linear with scripted events?MagickaBastionPsychonautsEven Cave Story

Mass Effect isn't an RPG.It's a cover based third person shooter with RPG elements.Just like Fallout, it's a shooter first, and RPG second.Dragon Age is a more accurate example of what a modern RPG is.
In fact, I'm doing a New Vegas melee run.
But no. Fallout 3 might be a shooter, but New Vegas and every other Fallout are NOT based on shooting. In fact, I'm doing a New Vegas melee run. Also, >death of action-packed FPS>Hard Reset came out not long aog
