Title: The eventual "death" of the action-packed FPS
Post by: Eion Kilant 739 on July 05, 2012, 10:55:36 AM
So as you people should know:

The adventure genere practicaly died at some recent point (though is returning somewhat). This death spanned roughly the release of Doom to the kickstarter event that really kickstarted Kickstarter.

Eventualy something will become even more popular than the FPSes (and generic military shooter fad) we have now. What is your take on this?

I can't wait to see what the realism market brings us.

But as far as the "future" of the "mainstream" genre, I am kind of curious where it would lead.

People pay attention to games besides the Wii shit and the generic "STOP SOME BIG RUSSIAN GUY" Fps?

We still have other options like RTS and Scrollers.

Most real RPG's are doomed. Now we have the short simplified stuff like Mass Effect. What a drag.

I dont think the adventure genre is dead, it's just not called adventure anymore because it's pretty much intergrated into RPG's. But it really depends on what you consider adventure, is it free roam?

Then:

Zelda
TES
Fallout
STALKER
Witcher
Just Cause

Or a kind of linear with scripted events?

Magicka
Bastion
Psychonauts
Even Cave Story

I concur, just because it's not a side scroller or a beat em up like Bastion doesn't mean it doesn't contain many of the traits that makes an adventure game, erhm adventurous.

Mass Effect isn't an RPG.

It's a cover based third person shooter with RPG elements.

Just like Fallout, it's a shooter first, and RPG second.

Dragon Age is a more accurate example of what a modern RPG is.

But no. Fallout 3 might be a shooter, but New Vegas and every other Fallout are NOT based on shooting. In fact, I'm doing a New Vegas melee run.

Also, >death of action-packed FPS
>Hard Reset came out not long aog

Playing call of duty with a knife only doesnt make it a medieval based war game. I dont see how your idea is much different.

Any game thats wide open that i can explore i call an adventure game i love exploring like in fallout NV all i did was walk from one area to the next just to explore the whole map and see everything and the exploring/finding new things was the adventure for me... so as long as free roam games with big maps keeps coming out I'll always have an adventure game...

Big fucking difference.
But the main point isn't guns.
Nor how you handle guns.
And the plot has NOTHING to do with using guns.

In fact, if you're good enough, you'll only have to kill if required for quests.
