Because I'm going to be buying a new computer sooner or later, I decided to ask you guys what programs you think that I, and anyone else really, should get.
So far all I know is Windows 7

Anti-virus first.
I recommend Norton Internet Security, I've never gotten a virus with it protecting my computer, and I download just about everything from torrents to random applications.
Be careful - you don't want unnecessary programs eating away at your CPU in the background even if they are safe.

Research is critical, nothing tells more truth than customer reviews from a credible site.
Stay away from netgear, they make excellent hardware but their software is shitty, I wish I'd done more research first.
(Their internet adapters use over 50% CPU and constantly disconnect...no support for windows 7 64 bit that is actually fully functional)

I reccomend AVG Free for anti virus, I don't worry about viruses. The number one way to avoid viruses is just to watchout what you click.

  • Anti virus (Avast)
  • Advanced System Care
  • Smart Defrag (Better than Windows Defrag)

I have Avast in my 4 computers. No virus for me.

You guys are leading him the wrong way.

The best antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials. I've had my new computer for about three or four months now and I've NEVER gotten a problem. Plus, when it updates (if it does) you don't have to do that pesky restart to finish the changes.

After you download MSE, you're going to want to torrent Photoshop, download your favorite browser, and update all your drivers (if you're building your computer). At this point I downloaded Steam and installed my games.

After I installed that program I had to do a destructive recovery on my hard drive the next day

I find Malwarebytes to be the best antivirus program (It costs money though). For free antivirus, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

CCleaner for getting rid of temp files.

Ultimate Defrag (This costs money too, but is a very customizable defrag program).

Ive never used AV, and I havnt had an issue in years with a virus... Get off youre damn animal "fun" sites... Though if you like google and explore random sites that fit your fancy, I would go for kaspersky internet security. You can reset their trial with either a program to reset it, or simply download it off their site again with a random email. Settings stay and all that, so its effectively free, and no one can yell at you for piracy, particularly if you happen to be against piracy.

Auslogics boostspeed is a fairly useful program I find. Makes a lot of chages in settings easy to do, which in convenient when installing a new OS. Also includs defragging along with a few more HDD tools that are nice to have, easily "freeze" processes so you can go back to them at a later time, so that you can do other things without closing the one you wish to freeze, and some other features I find very nice and convenient to have at hand.

Then there are the smaller rograms like fddshow (codecs, if you watch much video...), custopack (which is nice...), audacity (for those minor changes someone always wants...), Dropbox, and Unlocker1.9 (delete "derpy" files...)

But most importantly, stalker SoC, SC, and CoP. Dont pirate these.

Uhh, Malwarebytes is free.
Free for cleaning out stuff but you have to pay for it to act as an anti-virus program. Maybe get Microsoft Office if you have school.

Here's what I got:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit(Burned) - Good for backwards compatibility
Spybot:Search and Destroy
AVG Internet Security
Norton 360 (If cracked)
Malwarebytes

Yes, I'm a cheap bastard but it saves me a few hundred that I can put towards better parts for my bossly rig
