The only thing about naruto is that it is a terrible gateway anime. It really pales in comparison to some of the classics, as well as some others. It also personifies anime to people who dont watch anime, where it really shouldn't. Hell, the reason I dont usually tell people in public that i am in to it is because I'd hate to be associated with naruto.

People who have been watching Naruto since the start in 2002 are able to enjoy the show in an incomparable way to those who are just now trying to watch it.
Since those fans have known the characters so long and seen them get stronger, the battle scenes are just amazing. 
I think most people who try to get into the show don't know the background plot, and just see a filler.
The fillers are terrible, that's agreeable.  But the plot is the best plot for any show I've ever seen.
It's just planned out so well.

Plus it's not like bleach where ichigo can like easily kill some super strong guy, then loses to some weakling the next day.
