We Europeans and Canadians learn the US as the US and America as America. There's a reason why every European country is called by its name and not "Europe".

The United States is a collection of States that aren't all connected, hence the name.
The United States of America is a Country.
North America/America is a Continent.

And stop holding the "Most Americans say America" thing as your only argument. Supertoaster said it, thus, it's invalid.
