12:00 JST Japan Time - Japan meteorological society updated Japan's recent earthquake to a 9.0 magnitude.

Just to try to tell you the difference in that:

8.9 earthquake is equivalent to 336 megatons of TNT

9.0 earthquake is equivalent to 474 megatons of TNT

thats a difference of 138 megatons of TNT

EDIT:
projections in the event of the fukushima daiichi power plant meltdown

Japan is increasing the evacuation radius of the reactor to 60km i believe and are handing out iodine pills to protect from thyroid cancer.

Since original earthquake was 9.0, there is a 70% chance a 7+ magnitude earthquake will happen in the near future.

That graph is a hoax.

750 rads is equivalent to 750,000 millirems. The maximum dose for any adult worker is 5,000 millirems PER YEAR.

If the graph was true, the entire western US and Canada would be wiped out within two weeks.

After much work put into cooling the third reactor, they were able to start properly cooling the reactor - avoiding explosion from the built up hydrogen by the process used to release the pressure in the container to the air.

They made sure to note that while they believe a malformation has occurred to a small portion of the core, it is not confirmed there was an actual meltdown of any sort, and they doubt it based on the amount of time the core was exposed out of water.

Possible hydrogen gas buildup might cause explosion in reactor number three at fukushima number one plant, however, impact from explosion will not damage the containment vessel as they are made to handle impacts like those.

Reactor number two cooling water lowering and at boiling temperature. Tokyo electric is thinking about using the gas venting method used on reactor number one and three before to relieve the pressure within the containment vessel.

There is a risk of a second explosion at the quake-hit Fukushima power station, Japanese officials have said.

However, chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano said the facility could withstand the impact and the nuclear reactor itself would not be damaged.

Technicians are battling to cool reactor 3 following a blast at the building housing reactor 1 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, police have warned that the death toll in tsunami-hit Miyagi prefecture alone could exceed 10,000.

Miyagi includes the port of Minamisanriku which was mostly swept away by the tsunami.

The BBC's Rachel Harvey, outside Minamisanriku, says roads to the town are blocked and emergency workers are finding bodies amid piles of debris.

Officials previously said that more than 2,000 people died or were missing following Friday's earthquake and tsunami.

Millions remain without electricity and authorities are stepping up relief efforts as the scale of the tragedy becomes clearer.

About 310,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters, many of them without power, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.

Officials announced that the number of troops helping with rescue work in the region would be doubled to 100,000.
