New labtop...

I'm looking at getting a new workstation notebook, I have narrowed it down to just two laptops at the moment...

Lenovo Thinkpad W510:

CPU:      I7-840QM
GPU:      Nvida Quadro FX 880
Screen:  1920 x 1080
ram:       4Gb ddr3
HDD:      500gb 7200rpm
Price:     $1,974.00

http://tinyurl.com/y9uc882

What I like:
-Sturdy construciton
-Nice Keyboard
-Decent Battery life
-Plenty of ports

or:

Dell Precision M4500:

The specs are all the same as the lenovo except for:

GPU: Nvida Quadro FX 1800M

$2,348.00

What I like:
Has a back-lit keyboard
Faster Video Card

So what you guys think, at the moment I'm leaning towards the lenovo, but...

I welcome any better suggestions...

Few Requirements:

- 15" screen with greater than or equal to 1680x1050 resolution
- Does not use an intel graphics chipset.
- up to date (ie no last-gen proc's etc.)
- Doesn't look like it could be a transformer (this is a work notebook I don't really want the thing to look like a Ferrari though I wouldn't be too sad it if did  :dukenukem:)

What will I be using it for?

Mostly CAD and other engineering design programs,
Programming
A little movies and games when I'm board maybe?

Uhh

Those are kind of expensive for a Cad programming and gaming laptop.

But I do have a suggestion and my dad uses this one for work. His all tricked out Since his work is for the City of Milwaukee ERS

HP Pro Book is a great laptop for the price.

You might not love the onboard gfx in it but I think its a good laptop

Well the thing is, I'm (hopefully) going to be getting a grant here. Since I would have some extra money from it, I wanted to get a laptop that would last me for half a decade or so.

A few comments on that laptop:

-With a 32bit operating system it can only address ~3.3 Gb of the 4 Gb of ram.
-Has a rather lame screen resolution
-Looks pretty swish, and has a numpad too. :)

But thanks a lot for the suggestions!

CAD (Computer Aided Design) software tends to be quite demanding on the system, and a workstation graphics card helps significantly. With an Intel chip-set, Solidworks tends to lag significantly making the design work take much longer than it would otherwise, and also runs into numerous compatibility issues since the software developer expects you to have a workstation card and optimizes the program to work with it.

I want a workstation video card in there since there is a lot more support for them within the engineering software community, and doing things like auto-route on the OrCAD PCB editor wont take 10 minuets to tell you that you messed something up and have go change it and wait another 10 min to have it tell you you messed something else up.

I wanted the high resolution monitor since while everything does appear smaller on the monitor, there is a lot more stuff you can work on at once, and when your working on a large design, it's nice to not have to scroll around it so much, as it leaves you prone to making errors not being able to see the whole enchilada.

If I ever intend to do any simulations on the designs I make, having something that is relatively underpowered can make things take several hours extra.

My sister has the lenovo.

That's all I could say. LOL I'm sorry if I'm not much help (damn moose blood) but from the amount of time from her sitting and typing on it - she has no complaints. So maybe it's good.
I think the best thing she likes about it is it doesnt burn the crap out of her wrists. You know, from typing for hours straight.

Ahh ok
I see what your doing there. I didn't know you had a grant for this so ya.

I would think that what you said: Dell Precision M4500 or even a Powerful gaming Laptop like the ones from Ibuypower.com . You probably know this but you can harness the power of the gaming laptop into a nice and fast laptop with amazing gxf. But the only downside effect of getting a gaming laptop is that it might not go under the grant because you know the people are just going to think that you are going to use it just for games and such lol and also the look of it unless you can find a good case like .

I don't know I would ether go with the Lenovo Precision or even a http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Battalion_101_W860CU_Gaming_Laptop
because it looks like a real Professional Work laptop and also you can harness the power of its quad core i7's hehehe  ;).

Great Graphics too.
