choosing a monitor is basically preference and cost. for really hard-core gamers look for ones with shorter pixel response rates. maximum resolution should probably be something your graphics card can support or higher. make sure your monitor supports the connection your graphics card uses, e.g. vga, there are several types of dvi connections, hdmi, display port. but like i said its basically all preference, the only real compatibility you have to worry about is the connection.
I'm back and playing gmod again!

How much do you plan on paying? If you're used to using "normal" monitors, which are TN panels, you can get one for about $100 last time I checked. There's IPS panel monitors with much better color quality and viewing angles. They cost more, but provide much better quality. I got an IPS from ASUS, and now I feel sad when I have to use my laptop's TN panel

Depends how much you're willing to pay and what's your GPU. Unless you want just 1080p and not higher.

Qnix QX2710 would be the best monitor you could buy (considering the cost and features), but it's 1440p and 27".

Well there are some key things to look for in a monitor.

Assuming you will use it for games go for a TN panel. They are cheaper and usually have low response times.
Knowing that, a 2ms response time should not be a problem to get. (Difference with 5ms is marginal so you can get that if its cheaper.)

Resolution: Make sure you get a 1920x1080, this is a very important spec.
I believe this is the superior resolution even to 1920x1200 because most media is distributed in 16:9 and will stay this way for a while now.

I would prefer a 120hz monitor for V-sync and 24fps splitting.
This would probably really influence the cost so go for a 60hz is its a lot cheaper.

As for companies, Acer would probably be the cheapest,  and they aint too bad now.
My favorites are, Samsung, Asus, and BenQ

Hope that helps you picking a monitor :D

Which retina resolution do you mean? If you mean Apple's 2880x1440, then yes there is (4096x2160 and 7000-something....etc). But for now most GPU configurations can barely run games properly on such resolutions.

What do you plan to use a monitor for?

I recommend IPS panels if you can afford it.

Also, I don't recommend investing in anything with an LCD backlight, get something with an LED backlight. Will save you so much power, no warmup required, uniform coverage, and lighter monitor.

Every time you download Garry's Mod illegally, Garry makes a bug.

When people ask me "Plz" because its shorter than "Please" I feel perfectly justified to answer "No" because its shorter than "Yes".

Price Range?
If you're going for an IPS, most of these are good http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/monitor/#s=2300&w=1&l=1&p=1&sort=a9

Retina only means that the monitor has a high enough pixel density that... (its really high, the eye cant see or some shit.)
Commonly seen in phones where the screen and real small with a 1080p resolution so the pixels density is real high.

As for a monitor, its not worth it as it would require much more gpu power to output such a resolution on a 23" monitor.
