Laptop opinions

Well, seeing as I'm starting college and need a laptop, I need opinions of what to get, since I'm indecisive as hell. I prefer to stray away from Dell but if they are the most practical after college discounts, it would be fine by me. I've been browsing a good bit but I'm left with my head in the clouds, torn between what I want and what I need, so I'm currently at the point of "shiny shiny pretty pretty". I'm stuck without any opinions or bias towards any specific laptop available, so, well... shit. My only real requirements are that its not an Apple product, its lightweight with a decent battery, and the keyboard/touch pad is not a horrendously impractical mess.

So far, my experiences with Dell and Toshiba have been great, in comparison with HP, Sony, and others.

I think Dell offers some good bang for buck, but I'm not sure about its latest products.

I know the companies, but I'm wondering of specific products.

I've never been a big fan of Toshiba. The three I've had experience with (mine and the two my friend bought, all different models) had power supply issues. After a while, they'd just shut off randomly and the charger would stop working.

They may have just been defective, but I tend to steer clear of Toshiba.

I used a personal Vostro laptop from Dell and I must say it has never let me down. If you eventually choose to customize a laptop from Dell, I recommend getting a Latitude with quad-core.

It's costly though...

That Lenovo really is brilliantly priced. Sadly I couldnt find that model with a gpu on US amazon, other than generic intel 3000. Ill search around more when I get home I suppose.

The closest I can find in the US is this: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/z-series/z500-touch/

Higher end GPU and touch. US does not seem to have the GTX 630 Z580

Its listed as having a 740m on the link leading to it. HD4000 in the specs. Well thats bull

Looking at a Dell Inspiron 14z with an HD7570M. Resulting price is 831 USD. Opinions?
Dell kind of pissed me off by forcing a couple of 60USD software products on me... Like a 15 month mcAfee subscription that Im just going to format off the thing and install kaspersky to. But its still a fair price with the student discount. Along with the 738 resolution... Id like opinions.

Was considering a Lenovo Y500 with 650m SLI. Amazing price for what it is, but 3 hour battery life is dreadful.

Found it (theres a "next" button hiding it)

1k GT740M

lower-ish resolution on laptops are better IMO because you can crank graphics settings up without worrying too much.. makes it easier on the GPU

I know nothing of dell.

Still a bit crummy. I was hoping for a 900 resolution. Ill look up comparisons between the 740 and 7570, but I honestly dont think that the lenovo is practical at 1000 USD. My parents are covering 500 of the laptop, and seeing as Im only working for the summer, Id like to keep the cost down. The small power increase I may or may not get is likely not worth the extra 200, and that dell is probably the best laptop Ive seen for around 800. Ill keep looking however.

Edit: Well, I ordered the 14z. Would have preferred a touchscreen (I hate touchpads), but I wasnt going to pay an additional 600 USD for a touchscreen and worse hardware. Thankfully they included "Shipping Package - brown" with the order. I personally wanted purple, but they didnt give any options other than hardware options.
