I did this my freshman year of high-school.
Broke my radius on my wrist while doing a bit of motocross... Had to wear a splint for 4 weeks and a cast for 8 weeks, got surgery two weeks after I broke it since it had fallen out of place again. Yea not the most fun time of my life, now my left arm is about 1 cm shorter than my right.
So yea I understand the experience your going through, when I had first broke it and my wrist was about 2 in out of place, the lady running the x-ray machine was like, Can you please make your arm a bit flatter? .... (if I could I wouldn't be here...) so I just told her no, and eventually with the help of another doctor we managed to find a position that didn't cause too much pain, and relatively flat.
Can't they just set your hand bone and pin it? That's what they ended up doing on my wrist, had two 4 in pins going sideways all the way through my wrist. holding my radius to the adjacent bone.
