Well the dictionary definition of nerd is:
1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

However it is important to note that the word "nerd" itself is technically slang.
Being called a nerd is supposed to have a negative connotation, however having these traits does not make you a "nerd". People often do not understand what the word nerd really means (since the word itself is basically a contradiction of itself), when reality they are really just trying to call you strange, but instead use a slang word that is technically far more severe in meaning. It's like using the word "retard" or "gay" to call someone stupid. So yes being a nerd overall is not supposed to be a positive thing, but I feel it used more to describe certain aspects of a person, rather than a person as a whole. I have never really found myself saying "Oh I am a nerd" or "another person is a nerd". I can say I have nerdy qualities, but it does not take up my entire life. A person who is considered a "Nerd" by societies standpoint and not just nerdy, would be an extreme outcast more or less. Being smart and having good grades does not make you a nerd, it just makes you intelligent or hard working.

It's not that being called a "nerd" is a bad thing, it's just that most people don't have the brain capacity to know what a "nerd" is.

Everyone has different views on what a "nerd" is.
The way I see pre-adult life is basically.. (mostly for guys)
CHOOSE 2
-Gaming
-Social
-Academics
Now of course you can choose all of them and split them up to percentages, and the main categories would have subcategories, and those categories would overlap a little, but basically thats how I see it. One extreme would be a "nerd" (or) MAXIMUM Gaming, MAXIMUM Academics, and 0% Social. This is how I would define a nerd. Now with that said, the disadvantages of that would be social awkwardness, not many friends, therefore little to no connections when you are looking for jobs.

One bad thing about being a nerd pretty much what the majority said  being ackward which can be solved if the person try's enough at least from my perspective I guess it also depends on how you would take being called a nerd if you would ignore it or just take it as a compliment? But then maybe some people may miss interpret a nerd which may lead to bulleying etc. Or a persons parents could have divorced and since they feel depressed they rely on games instead of friends to make them feel better ?  Then what some  people said  there comes being close minded lower in self esteem etc. But again I guess it determines how you would define a nerd. And yeah there can  be many causes for a person becoming a nerd or why they are a nerd. In thiz generation I think it's becoming popular at least in my school.

A bad thing is people taking too much pride in being a "nerd".

LOLOL I'M IN NERD, I'M DIFFERENT, I AUTOMATICALLY DESERVE MY OWN CLIQUE.

I have a friend who is exactly like that.

Yeah. They're pretty much the textbook definition of nerd/geek, but take it is if they are a celebrity. Even when some of them don't know the first thing about programming/computer science.

You just don't have a sufficient magnitude of nerdiness to understand.

While I don't feel like I need my own clique, I am quite comfortable in that at any given time I am generally one of the nerdiest people for a 100 mile radius. Kinda the name of the game in the business I am in.  :dukenukem:

Yes it is possible to be too prideful in being a nerd; However, I don't really think that is an issue that nerdiness has alone. Being prideful in anything isn't good.

I didn't read the thread at all, but you rustled my jimmies with this nerd talk.

Nerd, as people born in the early 90s and before knows it, is defined by their ability to do well in school and play DnD and similar stuff. They are social outcasts BECAUSE they are shy, 'weird', and they just don't know how to socialize. Clothes also tend to sway towards the simple and comfort side, with just jeans and some t shirts. They also can't get good jobs/girlfriends/what have you until they hit their twenties and are forced to socialize with people that use them in college. It's a tight knit clique, just like all the high school cliques.

You, however, are not a nerd. You are smart, I will give you that. But unless you play DnD or watch some sci fi show religiously, you are not a nerd.

You obviously don't know what a nerd is... as Tiger Guy said. Being a hermit watching sci fi and playing DnD all the time doesn't make you a nerd. To most people in my school(and probably others as well), a nerd is somebody who is either smart, no social life, plays video games(even if it's just one, but then again all my school is full of wiggers) and things like that.
You should read a thread before posting. Assuming gets you nowhere. You can never truly know what it's like to be a nerd unless you're one yourself. You only know the stereotypical type of nerd. I don't want to sound disrespectful towards you, but you've got no knowledge of what a nerd actually is. Like Tiger Guy said, few people do.

I had said as people born in the early 90s and before knew it. I meant that the meaning between the generations may be different, but since you were asking what a community thinks is wrong on a forum, I think that's fair. I may not have been completely a nerd in my earlier years when I was in high in high school, but I grew up with an older brother who was one in the 90s. He did all the activities I mentioned, played old pc games out the butt, and always was inept at social interactions. I was giving my input on what I thought was wrong with being a nerd and I was giving just my opinion.

Where the hell did you get that from in this thread?

I hate that shit probably as much as you do, but I really don't see that regurgitating onto this thread.
Just the mentioning of the word nerd and naming one thing wrong with it likes it's the best thing in the word makes me think of that, I probably overreacted but still.

This thread was about naming something wrong with being a nerd. I mean the typical type of nerd that's hated for being... well above student IQ. I don't want to start a flame war with you so let's just drop the subject and get back on topic. Or, let the thread die.
