I think the kind you are thinking of belong to a group called the Southern Baptists. Their views are not what most Christians believe, they just seem to be the loudest for the most part.
Cause you know obviously since I'm christian anything with the word liberal in it is a sin, and I need to kick puppies, and burn me some witches at the stake.
If you actually read the bible, most of it is about how to live around other people with different views and not end up in nuclear war. At any rate, most of our current laws follow what the bible says to do anyway (Don't kill people, don't steal, don't provide false witness, pay your taxes)
I had a roommate for 1 year who was openly gay, wasn't really a problem. It was a problem because he thought his dorm bed was uncomfortable, and spent the whole year sleeping on the couch, pretty effectively keeping us from being able to use the living room. But that was the only issues we had.

What kind of christians have you met?
Kind of like what xrain said, people get the wrong idea about christians because of groups like the westboro baptist church. They are the loudest, with the most extreme ideas. Kind of like gays, when you think of gays, most of the time you think of the flamboyant ones, but most aren't like that.
