It's because people don't like what they don't understand. They are scared of it. (Hence homophobia)
It's also out of the norm so many consider it strange/different/wrong.
Another (BIG) thing is that it's against the bible/religions.

WE don't. Certain people do because they believe that their religion should be the rule of law, and exterminate gays; or are just childish. Notice that the former people that want to control gays life's are mostly the same people that believe that big government should not rule their lifes. A bit hypocritical eh?
