Actually. that does work sometimes, worst that could happen is completely ruining the drive, best that can happen is that it fixes the damn thing.
Formats the drive yes, but it sometimes can fix it.
Don't do that unless you're out of options. (Or to be safer just send it in to WD or Seagate or whoever the hell you got it from.)
I have no idea what I'm talking about ;_;

Depends on how it's damaged.

There are tools to recover certain sectors but it might not work very well for your case and can be extremely time consuming.
