2 Empty slots in my Harddrive and RAM
« on: June 04, 2012, 03:45:03 AM »

I was just browsing my local PC world store and decided to buy some more RAM to make my PC run a bit faster do it to being around 4 years old...
I then bought a stick of 1GB Ram and then proceeded to install it... however i was greeted by 2 slots already been filled up by two 1 GB ram sticks. However for some reason there are 2 less wide slots that i geuss different types of RAM can fit in. I recall in the store that they sold a similair size of RAM that can fit in. Now here is my questions:
1. Can i removed one of my 1gb RAM sticks and insert a 2gb RAM stick in its place?
2. Can someone identify what those extra different slots are for?
3.What is the max RAM that my PC can handle?

PC specs.
Windows Vista Home premium
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @2.20GHz 2.20GHz
2.00 gb RAM
32-bit Operating system
GeForce GT 220 Grapgics card

The amount of ram supported should be on your motherboard documentation. If you bought it from a OEM company like HP, you might want to look at their website before you buy that 2GB stick.

Also, post a picture of what your talking about because I really don't know what your saying..

Sabb: oh when'd you get there!?
...
Sabb: That was embarrassing.

What kind of RAM do you have? DDR2, DDR3.  Also since you have a 32 bit OS anything above 4GB is useless

I don't think he should switch to a 64 bit system anyway, the OS constantly takes up 2GB of your RAM at all times.
Please tell us your model of motherboard. Then we can tell you all.

If his CPU is 32 bit, it's not possible to run a 64 bit OS without replacing the CPU ofc.

Yeah, he said that he would just like to get rid of one of the 1GB sticks for a 2GB. Which would be 3GB which is technically the max.

And I'm calling either DDR or DDR2.. No way is it a DDR3 system considering there's only 2 DIMM slots and how outdated the CPU is.

the motherboard is a DDRII1, although i can't read it properly.

I can't buy a new a PC because im kinda poor.

Basically the orange ports at the bottom right is where my current 1gb RAM sticks are and part of my question is to find out what those ports in the top left are (the white ones)

Do you know the model of your computer? Like for example: Dell Dimension GX270. Bad example, but you get the point.

And that is not the mobo model. :p

It looks like it can support 2GB DIMMs. Which would be 4GB total if you wanted to replace that other 1GB stick.

I recommend:

Yea couple sources say that mobo uses the pc2 5300 (667mhz) ram type.

Here's a filtered newegg search to look for deals.. might be able to save 10 bucks or so going with a 2 pack of 2gb versus 2 singles etc.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007611%20600006098&IsNodeId=1&name=DDR2%20667%20%28PC2%205300%29

Edit://

Keep in mind with a 32bit operating system, you will be limited on the amount of physically available ram the operating system can utilize.

With that intel cpu you might see a small extension from PAE however at minimum you will only be able to access around 3gb of memory.. however i've seen system report up to 3.75 gb of available memory.

If you do end up increasing the ram above 3gb I would recommend to reinstall with a 64bit win7.. will save you some ram and a lot more polished than vista.. and you'll be able to access that 4gb :)
