He can't do that since he doesn't got the cracked steam version but instead a torrented one.
He can't update the game since it's not launched with steam.

What's odd is that he was able to play previously but not now (inferred).

i strongly suggest u buy the game. css + hl2 + gmod might have discounts on 3rd party sites.
