A simple suggestion, and one that wouldn't really make much of a difference:
Whenever a player joins the server for the first time, have a message welcoming them.
Reasons:
1. can stop complaints about, "Why do I have low karma, this is my first time playing"
2. Will make new players feel a little bit more welcomed.
