Title: Suggestions
Post by: Captain Communism on June 28, 2011, 01:11:59 PM
So, I'm getting a new processor for my Alienware (flame away). My only choices are Core 2 Duos, so what would you guys suggest?

EDIT: I'm thinking about getting this.

...How can your only choice be a dualcore? ._.

Anyway, I'd say get a good cooler to go with it and overclock it until it shits out its mouth.

That's the only (and I mean ONLY) good thing about Alienwares, they're upgradeable.

If a core2duo is your only choice.
I would strongly recommend a 8400 anytime over the 8600.
Basically the same chip but the 8600 is way overpriced.
Save you acouple hundred bucks.
Also the 8400 overclocks like Crazyyyy, if your into that.

Here's the thing. This is a birthday present, and we don't have the time to save enough to buy another pc. Instead, we're gonna upgrade mine until around Christmas, then buy a new gaming rig. (We bought a house and we have to pay for it at around the same time as my birthday)

EDIT: The rig I wanna get.

What do you people expect from me? I have NO experience in building anything, let alone a computer. Christ, I'm only 15...

BUT. I could just go with impulse and buy from CybertronPC (Heard good reviews about them, and iBuypower is to inconsistent with their products...)

I built my computer when I was 14...

All I did was watch this tutorial. It's not as nearly as hard as it sounds, just think of building a PC is like putting together a puzzle/legos. The only trouble you'll have is hooking up the power button and audio/usb leds and stuff but...yeh. And that shit you linked to is overpriced as fuck.

Just my own suggestion, but I would choose a different board rather then intel.
Intel boards are good, but they lack the extras and features you get from the big names.
Go with, Asus or Gigabyte. Only things I ever buy.

asus is my god.
gigabyte is good too though. gigabyte is generally cheaper but not as good as asus, but thats a small difference honestly, both are great companies. but if youre on a strict budget and dont need special features, go with cheapest board that fits your needs (as far as pcie slots youll need + 1, 4x ddr3, or ddr2 if youre using that, and cpu support for what you need), since honestly, if youre just slapping it together for general use, youll never notice anything but the price

Looking better.
Thing I would suggest myself cause I got quite the experience.

I would stay away from Western Digital, go get a seagate drive.
Also why ya getting a Firepro? Its a workstation card.
I'd say drop the sound card or invest more to get a Ati 6850 or Nvidia Gtx460.

Trust me it would benefit much more.
