Title: Dream Recall
Post by: coolzeldad on June 01, 2011, 12:24:42 AM
So I was wondering, how many of you try or do not try to remember your dreams?

Do you remember them well or poorly?

Which do you remember best or worst and why?

Where are you able or unable to focus on detail?

Was the dream more realistic than not in terms of the senses? ( sight, smell, taste, touch, hearing, anything abnormal? )

Also share a dream that was most interesting, exotic, or strange if you wish. ( I don't care how far you take it but please keep in mind the site rules - just use sense please )

You can answer any of the questions or just leave a story if you want, can also answer in anyway that works for you.
You can provide any other related information not mentioned here as well, even if it seems it might not be so important. Think if the time of the dream had any significance or what had led up to the dream, falling asleep, or waking up could have anything to do with it, etc.

Anyway, maybe we can learn something or gain some insight into dreams or anything else for that matter.

My Dream:
I was in the middle of a normal day. It felt as though a whole day was on my mind, however when attempting to remember any part before this I ended up in a blank, uncomfortable thought process that I sort of shook off and ignored. I proceeded to finish handling the rest of my activities and when I was near to finish them I had begun to realize I was going to miss other deadlines. I became very stressed as everything seemed to pile up. That is when I woke up. The reality of the dream had me thinking that it had actually happened. Realizing it didn't make sense why I would be in bed, I tried to analyze the dream. The actual activities I had been doing lacked any real detail. However, I could remember extensive detail from the thought of missing deadlines for important projects ( that I did have at that time ). My senses were extremely profound, I could feel, had the need to breathe, could see, hear, etc., but nothing out of the norm. I usually try to remember if I had any dreams and as much as I can about them. I believe the most memorable or easiest to recall are dreams with intense emotion - not necessarily involving me. Dreams lacking this usually lack detail, are harder to remember, and last less in memory over time.

inb4 we need to go deeper, please post serious content

The only times I happen to dream which is rarely, I always have bad ones.
It can be a variety of things that make me scared or extremely anxious causing me to always wake up flustered.
They are mostly about missing a deadline for some important thing or becoming the only person in the world who understood himself.

In the worst cases its about everyone that I know dying.

As for trying to remember them, I usually try to remember and make sense of  the first types of bad dreams but I always put the second one out of my mind.

I dream't a lot more frequently when I was a small child but not of such horrible things.
The one I remember most and also felt the weirdest was me floating around in a hollow sphere, going around in circles for the whole dream.

Me, I dream once per month. It's never a Dream, or a Nightmare, it's like caught up in the middle. Sadly, last time I had a dream was a couple weeks ago, and I probably never remember them. Also, my dreams are mostly about a small detail I see.

eg: I see a small rock on the sidewalk, I might dream about small rocks, or there will be one in my dream.

For some reason, my dreams are of stressful situations.
Home invasions
Physical Battles
or
of other people being hurt.

I also, for reasons I can't explain, seem to predict things with my dreams. (no, i'm not saying im psychic, or this is possible.)
And it is always the subtle, non important parts of the dream. like even a tv show in the background of a conversation in the dream, and that episode comes on later in the night.

Except for one time...
I had a dream where my grandma died. I was not worried at all when i learned this in the dream, i was only worried about my father. In the dream, he committed suicide.

1 day later
my grandma died.

You'll understand my
freaking the fuck out when that happened.

My dreams are either scary or painful shit:
Getting stabbed by a thief breaking into our house.
A horror scene from a movie I watched.
And some disturbing shit I can't remember well.

My dreams are always scary, but i always 'survive' from them.

My latest dream:

Me and some other people went into some kind of building. There were soldier and he checked your passports and all.
Then the dream got weird. All suddenly the 'place' turned into a church. It was just like in a funeral.
And the guy who checked all the passports, he turned into some kind of big and scary guy.
He just started to kill, until there was only me alive.
I was hiding inside of an office and there i tried to open a backdoor, it didn't open.
Then, i tried to open the door where i came in. It didn't open eather. While i was trying to open it, he heard it and i quickly went behind a wall.
He started to come towards to me, i could see the shadow of him coming closer and closer, then he just turned around and shut the door and locked it.
He just walked away and i saw water rising. I tried to open the door he locked, but it didnt open. I went into a panic and tried everything, until i saw a vent.
I opened the vent and there i tried to open another vent just on top of the other door. I couldn't open it. Then the water rised so high, that i couldn't breath anymore.
I went even more deeper panic and started thinking how it feels to drown. Then, all sudden some girl pulled my shirt and pointed to an open vent, which leaded to some kind of lake.
I survived, but i didn't see the girl anymore.
At the lake, i saw people just trying to climb on a dock.
Then the point of view changed, it was just like in movies.
I could see people being dragging away, pulled down to water.

Then i woke up or i just don't remember more.

The lake part should be from Anaconda.

Or usually i see a dream where i fall. It feels... so weird.
I can actually feel the falling. I have heard that people could die from that kind of dream./?

The only dreams I remember are the ones I actually feel...Once I imagined I was in the labyrinth for no damn reason and I had fallen into a pit and I woke up feeling as though I had just landed on my bed after falling...Also there was this one time where I had to get to the end of a hallway that had obstacles all over it while someone was chasing me... It never seemed to stop and I woke up sweating. It felt as though I had been running for hours.

Sometimes I'll listen to music and leave my headphones on as I sleep, which leads to interesting results.

Dreams are much more vivid, and I remember every detail when I wake up (But it eventually fades away)

For a couple days, I tried drawing what I could remember out on a sheet of paper. It helps significantly, since a single detail can trigger memory of more of what you may not have previously recalled.

It's a kind of "alarm" that wants you to kind of wake up from having a nightmare. But I'm not an expert :idk:

Sometimes I'll listen to music and leave my headphones on as I sleep, which leads to interesting results.
I like listening to music while going to sleep but my parents say I should stop because the wires of the earphones tangle around me. :L

I occasionally have the naked in public dream but then I also have dreams where everyone is naked but me (not joking).

I used to get nightmares after school went out for summer that we had to go back for the whole summer.

I get those nightmares where you are falling and hit the ground and then you wake upright in bed with your heart racing.

I have this scary dream (where you fall asleep face down on a pillow) I can feel the heat and it's hard to breath.

I have this one dream where I can make myself wake up, usually i'm being chased by a monster in my house, and once I had a lucid dream but it wasn't lucid. I knew I was dreaming yet couldn't control anything.

I try my best to remember my dreams since most of them are very interesting.
No matter how vivid and clear my dream was (and how real it feels) I can only remember bits of it.

The only times I do remember my dreams is if theyre epic enough and made me nerve wracked the most.

Like that time I had a nightmare that I was raped by a demon (LOL)

But most of the bad dreams I get usually consists of me being left all alone by myself. Not necessarily by loved ones but being alone in a huge crowd. As if youre with someone at a crowded mall and lose that person. Although I wouldnt remember who I was with (or who I lost in the crowd) but that feeling of looking around for someone you want/need there but can't be found and knowing in the back of your head that you were purposely left there by that person. Panic and fear is usually what I feel in those kind of dreams. Causing me to remember it.

Last nightmare I had was walking the city of Boston (this was shortly after our trip there) with proudly and he left me there and I had no idea where he was. I woke up crying LOL.

But just today, I had a dream about a game that proudly was playing as I was sleeping still. It was about my neighbor/co-worker who is extremely shy, quiet and very distant (this person doesnt smile or laugh which draws me to him because of his mysterious personality) - had a girlfriend and he was acting all happy, smiling. I was like :O

I get those nightmares where you are falling and hit the ground and then you wake upright in bed with your heart racing.

I heard those falling dreams where you fall but wake up before you hit the ground, if you actually DON'T wake up before you hit the ground, you're dead?
LOL. idk wtf that was about but I was like :O

Dreams have affected me my whole life. When I was a kid I decided to keep a dream journal, yes I have one, and log all of the dreams I could remember.

The whole reason I decided to keep a dream journal was because of the dream I had that day. I was drifting through water trying to grasp for a breath of air but I just couldn't breath. This went on for a while but I wasn't suffocating. I just stayed there until a pair of hands caught me, all the water around me fell and I was being held by my grandpa. I looked around then I remembered the place, my whole family was there. Then it just became dark and I saw my grandpa laying down on a table being surrounded by family members crying. The oddest part was, this had already happened in my life before.

Without the journal I could hardly remember the dream at all, it's just one big blur if I try to think about it. Most of my dreams access some event that has happened in my life before either it be sad or happy memories. I keep them logged in the journal to see if it was a made up dream or if it was real.

tl;dr.

I have dreams about something that happened to me before so I keep them in a journal.

I was calm as fuck (surprised) but I couldnt move. Before that, I knew I had some kind of trippy ass dream that involved a lot of fucking colors swirling around. That's all I could remember. Then I remember waking up on my side. I knew I just had a freaky ass dream. Then I realized I couldn't move. I looked around at what I can and saw that the walls were turning black. I knew I was awake just couldn't move. I was still calm. And considering that I was on my side still (facing the wall) I heard behind me, my door fly open.

That's when I lost it.

Anyway, maybe we can learn something or gain some insight into dreams or anything else for that matter.

inb4 we need to go deeper, please post serious content

Uh, it would appear dat my computer decided not to ping earlier, and erase about some text close enough to the character limit... However, I'd might as well see if I can recover it.

That took forever to write so here's the second part I prepared stupidly.

Shame because I did some fair work on describing the setting and the senses rather than the story itself  :-[

I even answered the questions...

Part 2

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
