So I'm picking out courses for next year, and I decided to pick up a foreign language.
Not sure which I should do
I already know Spanish pretty fluently, so that's off the table.
I also feel that learning Chinese/Japanese might be a bit difficult, since the sentence structure and overall way of speaking is completely different from English, my primary language.
ATM, my options are
- German
- Italian
- Russian
- Dutch
- French
Not too interested in taking German, as a good friend of mine is in it, and absolutely hates it.
Might do Italian, but afraid it'd be an easy A since I can read some Italian because I know Spanish. I actually want to learn a new language, not extend what I already know.
Debating between Russian or French.
Want to know your opinions.
-
Don't start learning German unless you're 100% determined to do it. German is one of the hardest languages to learn due to its ridiculously complex grammar.
There are 10 rules to put a simple comma, there's nouns that are capitalized, nounized verbs that get capitalized too, a certain sentence structure that differs hugely from other languages, and so on.
Really, to learn German, you have to want it.
Dutch is very similar to German from my experience - at least, I can understand about 50% of what Dutch people are saying to me.
French is a horrible language please rape your face
Italian is hurr durr too
Russian might be cool

Only reason I'm considering Russian is so I'd be able to understand half of the people who play in the middle of the night.
Although I haven't played in ages, I'm sure that hasn't changed ._.
Anyways, I also have the option to do Chinese or Japanese.
I can see Japanese being useful, but TBH, I think it'd be too difficult :L
-
English please

Again, I only know Spanish/Latin.
I can understand most Italian, but don't expect me to be able to speak it.
//misread your post.
Ehh. Not interested in taking Italian because of how close it is to Spanish. I want to learn an entirely new language.

But that makes it easy

But I don't want an easy A.
Err, better yet
I don't need an Easy A.
Want something that I'd actually learn from, but isn't so difficult that I'd be going "WHY DID I PICK THIS ONE".
:L
-
Oh wait for school? lol
-
Oh wait for school? lol
YEAH.
LOL.

Do Russian, it seems like a cool language.
-
Russian would be most interesting I think.
-
German may be a complex language but English is a Germanic language so there are quite a few similarities.
Also, if you know Spanish, Italian will be much easier.
-
My grandparents were both german and a lot of my other family is also from Germany.
Considering i'm like 98% german, DO FUCKING GERMAN.
-
Korean.
But anywhay.
Either German or French.
-
If you want to be popular with the ladies, go with French. I took it and you can tell some chick your grocery list in french, and it still sounds sexy.
Russian is good if you like vodka, or want to talk to Russian children.
-
Really depends, I think you should go with Russian, but please don't start mic spamming ._.
-
French is more of a complex language than German for English native speakers. Few basic words in the German language are similar or exact to English. Hence I know German, Spanish, Dutch(Mostly), Russian(Mostly) some Japanese, some Italian, and some Danish, I would say German was the easiest to learn and understand.

I'd like to see some examples of that German. And those words that are the same in German and English.
There are over 60,000 words in German, so I doubt "many" words in German are similar to English. I know some are, but that's just very few that are being used just about never anyway.
-
I just looked up a few phrases and sentences in French.
Surprisingly, I can make out what it's trying to say, it's still a (mostly) latin language.
Russian would take a lot of getting used to, because of the different alphabet.
I *can* take both. It'd be tough, BUT THE PRIIIIIIIZE.

I was just using "Many" as an example that German and English are both Germanic languages. Don you don't have to defend yourself when you think you are being under attack, it seems lately you do this to everyone? hmmm?

Learn Chinese while you're still young.
Seriously.
Many white people in my school started learning in middle/high school and they're doing fine.
-
Id say Chinese would be the best investment for the future.
By that time China may have taken over USA.

French derived from latin, so it is latin-ish. French is easy to understand if you already now latin. The only problem is that the is MANY exceptions, and it can get confusing, hell even I have so problem with my spelling in french. For example: Des animaux
This is a basic exception, but there is a lot like that. Normally plurial ends with an ''S'' but in this case it ends with ''AUX''. ANyways, whatever language you go for, make sure it's worthwhile and something you wanna do.

Dude spanish and Italian are totally different (well as different as latin based languages can be). I like italy, I have family in Italy, Italy is the best. However, from your list, I'd say french or italian cause those girls be hottest. From the given languages, of course.

Nope, Latina girls are hotter :)

I think you guys are missing the point.
I don't want to learn a new language for the hell of it,
I want to be able to understand other cultures.
Think about everything in our media we have in English,
Movies, games, stories, music,
There's nearly and equally large amount of that, which resides in the countries native language, and would be amazing to experience it first hand.
Not for all these crazy theories you're all coming up with.

I'm telling you, learn Chinese.
China has the fastest growing economy in the world. It is predicted that by 2030 (Which is when we are all old enough to run our own businesses) China will be as developed as the USA. My dad has become a millionaire by working here.

All the people telling you to learn chinese can suck a big one. Spend a semester learning chinese and you will barely be able to introduce yourself (I know, i took it). Spend a semester learning Japanese and you would be able to survive in Japan (I also know cause I took it).
Japan is also the fucking land of technology and shit. It has a unique culture teeming with fun tiems. Plus, unlike spanish or french, you could whip out some ”てめ、死ね!” on their little bitch selves and they wouldn't know what hit em. Plus there is the whole anime thing, ya know.
Please do not seriously consider mandarin unless you can buckle down for 2-3 years to actually learn it. You got no help with that either. If you go down the Japanese path, I can help you through the beginning hurdles.
Oh one last thing. Japanese grammar is a piece of cake. No future tense, no subject verb agreement, no shit at all. The grammar is easy as dicks. You just have to learn two alphabets and the kanji. Psh that's easy though.

well, while you're showing the chinese operatives your anime collection, I will be begging for them not to kill my family in a language they understand.
PS:
-
I'd still go with french. "The language of Love"
Would you rather be able to talk to random Chinese people, or sound suave to a lady-friend your trying to impress.
Besides French Cuisine is the bomb. Crepes anyone?
-

Have you even looked at Mandarin? Did you know you can say a complete sentence using the word "ma" five times in different accents. 媽罵瑪馬嗎
Means "did mother scold the horse?" Put it in google translate and you get "Ma ma ma ma ma". Thats the shit you have to put up with in mandarin. Japanese? Shit I just read the yomo introduction in the languages section and im still in first semester Japanese.
If those chinese invade your abode, just tell them wo shi chung guo ren. Everything be alright then.

As my counter to this, I will first say NO.
I will then say "MA ma ma ma ma."

玛 doesn't even mean anything, you're just saying "Has mom scolded the horse ma?" and no, ma does not mean "mother" in this sentence.
To say "Has mom scolded the horse?" You say "妈骂马吗?" which is pronounced "ma ma ma ma" in chinese.
HOWEVER
If you noticed the the above sentence, all the words are similarly pronounced, AND they have a common part. All words include "马" in them. So just remember: ANY word you see with "马" in it is most likely pronounced "ma".
Also, it's "wo shi ZHONG guo ren", not "chung". There is no pinying of "chung", only "cheng" and "cheng guo" means city state. Therefore, you are saying "I am a city state person."
But, of course, "cheng guo" is not limited to only "city state"
"cheng guo" can be:
城国 - City State
成国 - Become a country
成果 - Result
城郭 - Castle
So learn chinese only if you are determined, cuz it's fucking hard, but useful as fuck in the future

You know, I had (was forced to) to lrn2french from Grade 3 to Grade 9...
I know that feel
I was forced to start learning it in 4th Primary school ...
and I'm still learning it.
Besides French Cuisine is the bomb. Crepes anyone?
I had Crepes once in France.
I was around 11 or so, and I thought it would be a good idea to order them with absolutely nothing inside them -- probably the driest food I have eaten in my life.
Around 2 years later I had it again with something inside, and good lord they sure as hell aren't bad. I'd hit it.
Anyway,
learn Chinese to welcome our future leaders.
