Title: Conventions
Post by: Seb on July 02, 2012, 01:02:13 AM
Any of you regularly go to conventions near your area?
There's something down here called SuperCon, it's like a Comic Con Lite and it's pretty nice. Lots of shops, costumes, and an awesome rave afterwards.

Prepare your bandwidth, as I unleash a shitload pictures of cosplayers and, the life of all raves, the Party Gun! I also busted my lip at some point during the rave, and I do not remember exactly when.

I live in South Carolina and what's a convention?

But in all seriousness, I think I may fly to Cali and go to comic con for my 17th. Not entirely sure yet.

I'll be going as James Bond if I do.

There were A LOT of people dressed as Homestuck characters here. I would go up to groups of them and ask why they were all dressed like Satan, lol.

I also called every Spiderman "Deadpool" and every Deadpool "Spiderman".

I've gone to:
Anime Mid-Atlantic
Katsucon
Otakon'10 (dressed as Kairi)
Otakon'11 (dressed as Xion)

I have lots of fun at them, it's always interesting to see all the the time and work people put into their costumes and see all the cool stuff there is to buy. I am planning on going to Comic-con next year, I don't know who to go as yet, but I want to start planning xP Looks like you had a good time, almost makes me regret not going to Otakon this year, alllmooosssstttt. xD

I guess I go to the Renaissance fair whenever I can. Those duels are amazing. Always feels fun to pick up that giant hammer and pretend you're big and tough before you realize that you just dislocated your shoulder. funfun.

350 DOLLARS FOR A FUCKING HAMMER? THAT'S COMPLETELY reasonable.

oh shit I remember going to one of those when I was in 2nd grade on a field trip, it was kind of weird walking around in a school uniform while everyone else was all dressed up for it.. I remeber seeing these tiny drum cymbals you can put around your finger or w.e. and I wanted it SO BAD I even asked people around me for money and begged our chaperone for it, but I never got it ):

Can those technically count as conventions? I guess they are sort of like them event wise lol. I've been to two Renaissance fairs. They're really cool. My first time I went as an elf, I worked my ass off on that outfit x_x and the second time as a just a bar wench type shit. I had an amazing time each time, they're so much fucking fun. And the food is really good too. I can agree though that shit there can be really expensive, I remember my friend and I were browsing around, looking at these really cute hair accessories and I asked the lady how much this crown like pin cost, and she was like "3" and I was like "$3.00?! :DDD" and she just smiled at me and said "no" and walked away. :(

I also did some archery at the first one I went to, it was really sweet. I liked using the long bow. The lady/man/it thing that ran the archery stuff though was really rude though, lol.

Ah, those tiny drum cymbals.......I hated those.

Honestly I never really dressed up since I couldn't really afford to get that metal armor or custom clothing whenever I went. Just had more important shit to buy first. Really, if you can impress some people (some how ._.) they're so into it that they'll give you shit. I still think those duels are really intense.

I guess if a Comic Con or any other one of those conventions come up around Las Vegas I'll try to dress up as doctor purnell with a gas mask, although nobody would know who that is. If anyone knows of any near here please tell me, I really need an excuse to buy one.

Also, by any chance someone know the price of regular gas masks?

Also a labcoat, something along the lines of this.

They're actually pretty cheap, usually like $10 - $40. When I was looking for the GP-5, prices were from $15 to $25. The PMG that I'm gonna need for the Elite is around $12 to $20, as far as what Ebay is telling me.

I don't go to conventions for 2 reasons.
1. I live in the South-Eastern US. We don't get conventions.
2. The sheer creep-to-normal human ratio found at conventions.

It's not that hard to make a Link cosplay, though. Of the ten or so links that showed up to Supercon, a good six of them looked amazing. None of them were girls. If you want to, go ahead, but I'm sure you can definitely do much better.

This shit takes hard work and dedication.

YOU bitch please, the hardest part of that looks like the gloves and waiting for the shield and sword to come in the mail. What would really take hard work and dedication a making an costume of armor, or something elaborate. Link's outfit is neither elaborate or armor, and ergo is easy to make.

Simple outfits can be more elaborate then you think. Trust me. Making super cool looking armor may take a lot of time, but making a simple outfit look legit takes a lot of time and work too. The people who made that cosplay made the shield and the sword, made the outfit and the boots and shit. Then you have makeup to do, a long with attaching the ears, making the wig perfect, possibly contacts. Some people like to make their own things, which is what this person and his people did. Just that alone impresses me a lot. All that time and effort for something that looks simple.

If they MADE the sword and shield, that's pretty neat. If the clothes they're using are hand-sown, that's pretty neat too.

But otherwise, you throw on a big green shirt over a long-sleeved white shirt and white pants, put a leather belt over your belly, buy a leather belt with pouches and sling it over a shoulder, put a thin green hoodie's hood over your head, thin leather boots over your feet, bam. Styling the hair can't take too long if your hair is long enough, putting the ears shouldn't take more than a few minutes unless you're retarded. A few hours spent driving, fifteen minutes spent putting the costume and all it's pieces on, and not much more than $55 spent (not counting the shield and sword, and chances are they won't let you in with the sword anyway).

I'll give credit where it's due, though: it's hard to put Photoshop's contrast filter over you in real life.

Yeah that entire cosplay is handmade, so I respect it a lot.
But I can understand what you mean by the other stuff. To be honest though, I'd much rather make my costume as perfect as I can, rather than use cheap shit. I like to make my stuff look nice, not tacky. With my Xion cosplay, yeah I made the Keyblade and put a shit ton of work into making it perfect so it would stand out. As for everything else, I did NOT want to downgrade my lovely key with a shitty cosplay. You have, no idea how expensive my outifit was...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And majority of it I bought with my own money. I put so much time looking for the right things to wear, the perfect shoes, the right wig. Even though not everything was made by me, I took the time to find things to make it perfect, not just throw something on. It really ticks me off when I see really poorly done cosplays, I understand if people might not always have the money or the means to make it look perfect, but I feel like when you make a shitty cosplay, you're making the character shitty too.

So even if a person does not make everything, it doesn't mean that time can't be put to buy nice things to make it look really nice. They don't even have to be expensive things; a lot of the stuff I found was a lot cheaper than most stuff floating around.

I'm done rambling on about cosplays now. lol...

Like I said, I'd only go as a TF2 Character. More than likely the Soldier.

Not only would I be alone, I'd have to live up to These guys (http://ryancrasmussen.blogspot.com/2009/11/ryan-1-world-0.html)

AND THEN, I've never like comics
so
I'd only be going to...play dress up

You can get purple shades, a wig and a cardboard cut-out Rickenbacker and pull a Geddy Lee.

I can get a Sgt.Peppers costume and pull a Ringo Starr.

The only way I would go to Comic Con is if 13 other people decided to cosplay Organization XIII with me.

Actually, going as Walton Simons would be a great idea.
