Title: Choucho's Helpful Guide to Spotting a phishing attempt
Post by: Trinity on April 20, 2010, 09:44:32 AM
Take a look at this conversation:

xXWarStrikerXx [CAN]: www.steampwoered.c4.to (http://www.steampwoered.c4.to)

♫๖ۣۜChoucho♫: Cool phishing attempt broha

xXWarStrikerXx [CAN] is now Offline.

Now you may wonder,"Nurse Choucho, how did you know it was a phishing attempt with out even going to the site?"
Spotting a phishing attempt is very easy
One of the most vague ways is the name
www.steampwoered.c4.to
See what's wrong?
The site name is "steampwoered" instead of "steampowered"
This is to make the site look original
Before clicking on any kind of link check for small mispellings in the the name
You may also want to get a toolbar for your web browser
that shows you information about the site, such as date registered, location, ect.
Often times phishing sites would be found early on prior to the attempt
usually within two weeks

I suggest using firefox or google chrome,as these are the latest and most protected browsers

Do not use internet explorer

Also,if you're going to enter in personal information to ANY site use a private browser

Finally,I suggest using ZoneAlarm maximum security,it's award winning protection will keep you safe no matter what

Be safe,and remember

Nurse Choucho is her to help

Real:
www.store.steampowered.com (http://www.store.steampowered.com)

Fake:
www.steampowered.com (http://www.steampowered.com)

Happened to my friend. He sends me to the link saying:

Him: OMG DUDE I JUST GOT A BUNCH OF FREE GAMES! www.steampowered.com (http://www.steampowered.com)

Me: Um dude... This isnt real. The real one is www.store.steampowered.com (http://www.store.steampowered.com)

Him is now offline.

I laughed at his stupidity.

I probaly misread it but can't you also tell that it is fake because of the ending adress? Since this is not a .com adress which is the standard for steam. and also it has to adreses endings like randomgs.co.cc

Hi! Can you explain more stuff about zone alarm?
I tried to look it up on google but it just directs me to forums talking about how awesome it is.
Can you explain what it does, what it is and how good is it?
Please and thank you!

Also yeah I love this guide. Proudly should've read this since he got phished and his account stolen.
But thankfully he got it back.

It would be a big help if someone can explain :)

Zone Alarm fucks up my windows 7 ultimate, I had to reinstall it 3 times because of zone alarm,

I installed zone alarm, Rebooted PC, Then after 5 seconds after login, Windows crashes, Every-time I install it, So I just use MSSE + Windows Firewall

Zone Alarm is good but i can't use it :(

I had it on windows xp
