Well, if you don't need the advanced features, the express edition is free.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)Unless you're doing GUI programming I GUESS, why use Visual Studios?  It is so goddammed bloated, makes your projects absurdly bloated regardless of whether you use C++, C, C#, etc.
