Yea, cause items are earned.
It's totally not like you just have to be in game for a while.

I also seem to get a item every time I succesfully trade something with someone...It happened twice.

The way the item drop works is that you get a drop at random times, usually about a half hour apart, and you get a max of 8 - 12 drops per week. On Wednesdays it resets.
