We have 5 kittens right now, 3 were crippled in an awful string accident when they were born. Tangled around 3 of their legs and ones neck. They all lived, but 3 don't have toes just the pad.

Think about our troops, some have seen their close friends slowly die from a horrendous abdominal injury. They carry on.
On a less horrible, but similar, situation you must try to do the same. There's no point to causing yourself further sadness by holding it against a whole family of creatures.
I'm not saying forget your cat, just try to forgive dogs.
