Gay marriage legalized in New York

One of the republican legislators said something along the lines of "I can't think of any legal reason not to approve of same-sex marriage", and he's right. All anti-gay-marriage argument is because of religion and that completely goes against separation of church and state. Why is it the church has to be dragged kicking and screaming to accept civil rights and tolerance that it claims to have a monopoly on?
