Any word's meaning depends on the context. There's a series called Queer as folk, and it ain't offensive. Also, please use gay instead of homosexual. You don't call heterosexual people heterosexual, do you? You call them 'straight'. Then why not call us 'gay'?
Plus, gay actually means glad or happy. Gay for fags is g.a.y., which means 'good as you'.

I actually used gay before saying that "im gay right now",thinking that it means happy and some guys kept laughting when i said that.
I didn't know why!

It's not what you say, it's how you say it.
Not the same as:"Hey fag whattup" as I tell some of my fag friends, to "fuck you fag".
