Let the flame war begin

<< < (9/11) > >>

For the OP:

That is how you solve it, the only way you can get 288 as an answer is if you failed at order of operations, and divide 42 by 2 to get 24, then do the parenthesis, and multiply 24 by 12.
But that is an incorrect way to solve the problem.

Since you all ignored my challenge of a Triple Integration

Here is the solution. (sorry my handwriting was kinda sloppy at the beginning, click on it to make it bigger)

This is how I learnt

e.g.
[(9000 * 9000)9000]

[((3.14 * 3.14)3.14)3.14]

so brackets go on the outside just to make it look neater.
I don't know why I said what I did in the last post I must have been thinking of something else.

Also would anyone happen to know the keyboard shortcut for exponents?

But... Now your failing at order of operations. Multiply and divide have the same "priority", so when you have both it goes left to right.

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)           Parenthesis first!
24(12)              Left to right! (48/2)
288                   Last step!

Not quite, your making several algebra mistakes.

first you cannot divide items in the denominator separately

But you are correct, multiplication and division have the same priority.

However, it's not order of operations that prevents you from doing this, its the basic rules of algebra that prevents you from calculating it like that.

Unless of course the OP wrote the equation ambiguously intentionally, using a little loop hole in standard equation writing.

48÷2(9+3) Generally means 48/(2*(9+3))

48÷2*(9+3) Can mean

48/(2*(9+3))
or
(48/2)*(9*3)

If that is the case, then it's just a failure on the OP's part to properly define an equation.

If he did intentionally write it that way, He is going to end up banned because stuff like that pisses me off  O:-)

If you want something to really mess with your brain, try this on for size.

a=b
ab=b²
ab-a²=b²-a²
a(b-a)=(b+a)(b-a)
a=b+a
a=a+a
1=2
