Monsanto and GMO thread

   If anyone of you have already heard about Monsanto, a company which specializes in genetically modified crop production, then you should probably know by now that it's quite a big threat. There have been already tests on animals like mice and pigs which proved that eating genetically modified organisms does significant harm to their internal organs and yet Monsanto is pushing forward and so far government isn't even trying to stop it despite many protests, In fact there was even a Monsanto protection act proposed in the government although I don't remember for sure if it is still in effect. A second world wide march against Monsanto is happening today as well although I doubt it will yield any significant results.
   So what's your stance on Monsanto and GMO products? I also heard that in America GMO products don't even get labeled as such, as opposed to other countries in the world.

Yeah it's pretty shitty how these companies can get away with injecting their food with chemicals and genetically modify them without the government stepping in. Once it becomes really big enough, pretty sure there will be protesting it and law suits. I'd love to buy only organic food, but shit, it's way too expensive compared to normal groceries.

I believe GMO labeling is required in some states in the United States.

Personally it's shit, but also raises another concern of worldwide limit of food supplies.

Even if there would be a food shortage, I still think that GMOs usage should be as small as possible even if that would mean that there would still be a lack of food. It's not worth to damage ourselves and possibly even entire generations just because of food shortage, instead it would be much better to find more efficient ways to grow non-GMO and ecological foods.

People should know genetic engineering is NOT some kind of evil sorcery.  It has great potential in the future.

However, scientists are playing with genes here; the whole process and understanding of genetic engineering is crude and only the tip of the ice berg. Organisms have natural barriers in their cells to prevent the mixing of DNA from other species.  Scientists currently use viruses to inject cells with new DNA. Ok, so that's not so bad though right?  If you can get over the fact they are bypassing nature's old design, sure.  Next you have to consider the ramifications.

Current genes in all organisms DNA strands are tried and true over millions of years of natural selection in nature.  New genes could change chemical reactions within cells and change how they function.  That said, the results could be the creation of new toxins, allergens, and other nasty stuff.  If you still feel everyone has the right to eat what they want, consider that these toxins and such could build up in the food chain, and that would be catastrophic.  The concept has great potential, but its far too dangerous to be mass marketing GMOs at this point in time.
