Reminds me of Cowboy Bebop, where everyone evacuates earth because of too much space junk (unused satellites).

Earth then has meteor showers every now and then and the remaining people go underground.

I just saw this on the news a couple of hours ago when I was at my friends house, also in-case you guys don't know, there is a pretty damn big meteorite that is flying very close to the earth at this very moment. On the news they also said that it is related to this accident.
