When you're importing custom textures into VTFEdit, fiddle with the "Normal Format" and "Alpha Format" menus as this can help cut down filesizes of .vtfs.

Like let's say you make a sign and then import it. If it doesn't have an alpha channel / not-transparent, choose DXT1 and RGB888. This can drastically reduce sizes of .vtfs (from 4mb to 500kb) and can help out older computers running on a lower directx level.
