You killed the detective as an innocent.

He had hit you once, and it appeared accidental, but you went ahead and attacked (took 4 hits to kill him) until he was dead. Unless the detective had gone around killing everyone (which he hadn't as far as I had seen), there is no reason for you to touch the detective as an innocent.
