Graphics card problem

I have a ATI 6790 made by XFX that can run Bf3, Saints row 3, GTA 4 and other games with Direct X 10 - 11, But when I play garrysmod and other games that use Direct X 9 and lower my PC freezes up and my screen goes black and when the screen comes back on I can't see my game.

My card did this too when I tried to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and once in GMod. I had to restart my computer because of it.

Reinstall drivers. The usual, or try downloading Direct X 9 again.

It´s a problem with all the new hardware, It is not optimized for old games anymore :/, for instance take homeworld 2, you run i ton a winxp ancient 1gb ram monster :D(gt7600 :D), and then play it on a i7 4gb ddr3 ram + gtm 525 :D
Conclusion, new hardware sucks ass with large battles(complex mod tho :D)
