The only reason they also put $1.99 and not $2.00 is because the human mind thinks that it looks cheaper since it sees a 1, not a 2 so it benefits industries... in a way.

I have a collection of pennies because I go to burger king alot and the meal cost 6.99 :trollface:

Not to me it looks like it costs more since theres double 9 instead of double 0
But then agian i don't really look at prices all that much if i want something i buy it Lol doesn't matter what the price is...

Anyways, what's being suggested is do what the other countries are doing, and just round to the nearest 5.
Ergo, if you buy something that costs 17.54, it'le be rounded off to 17.55.
