Title: I need a graphics card
Post by: Rocket50 on August 21, 2011, 03:06:32 PM
Being the person with shit all computer experience, I need a suggestion on what graphics card to buy.

-I am willing to go at most, 175 dollars (With rebate included) with no PSU restrictions
-Brand Preference: ATI or Nvidia, doesnt matter as long as its not some brand no one has ever heard of

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007708%204017&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Pagesize=100 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007708%204017&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Pagesize=100)

There's a link above to the Canadian Newegg site. But if there's a graphics card from another site that you think tops those ones, feel free to add them

Appreciate it :L

I'm not an expert but this one seems promising

175$.
Your best bet would be a 460 or a 6850.
There seriously identical performance. Pick which ones looks nicer lol.

For $175..

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121391 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121391) It's $167. This is the Asus CuCore one so it stays cooler and you can overclock it farther. If you don't want to overclock and don't care much about temps they have a Palit one for $140 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&Description=GTX%20460&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=100 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&Description=GTX%20460&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=100)

The 460 is a bit better then 6850, not by much.

EDIT: And if you see an Asus one for $144 that's because it's only 768mb of memory (and the peformance between the 1gb and the 768mb is pretty different)

Yosh, nid get Supertoaster's suggestion. Since the 460 and 6850 are pretty much in the same performance range, I'd get the ASUS one. ASUS cards are epic for overclocking.

There the same, If you can find a better price.
New driver updates have really boosted the 6850 and all 6xxxx series alot.

And Crossfire also scales better then SLI now.

the 6870 is only a tiny bit better then the 460. In benchmarks I saw the 6870 was only a little bit better (like 3  to 5 fps difference maybe?) in Battlefield 2, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. GTA IV, Metro 2033, and a few more) so you're better off getting the 460.

Personally I'd suggest the gtx465 since it's a bit faster at a still reasonable price. If you don't mind gambling try ebay.

That happened with me once. But I bought GTA: San Andreas for the computer and realized my Compaq didn't have a DVD drive.
