Title: Is American Airlines A good Airline?
Post by: Yellow Killer on August 06, 2011, 07:10:05 AM
Alright, I'm going on vacation next week to Ecuador and I'm taking American Airlines to go from New York to Florida, then transferring to another airline to go to Ecuador. Is American Airlines a good Airline?

Depends on the criteria of good - service, getting tickets, checking in, onboard, class of service, route [which dictates the aircraft], etc.

And a variety of other factors - route [which airport will you leave from, which one in florida will you be going to, and will you be taking American to Equador too?], time of day, etc.

Then again, so far as service on board, depending on class of service, it feels more like what every other legacy carrier has become  - minimalized, compact, more bland overall.

[My rents have ben flying American for a long time, as a result, every trip I've been on for the most part has been with American.  Been in coach, business class, first class on a variety of their aircraft, on a variety of their routes, and as a result have experienced a LOT of different things too. :D]

AA is not a bad flight company.. I flew from Connecticut to California  for the winter NAMM show.. Friendly hostesses good food.. They have these tv's in the back of every seat that you can watch moveis on.. surf the internet or check weather status etc right in the seat.. only thing i didnt like was the waiting really..

Enjoy your flight :D

They usually have fair prices and are decent enough flights. For domestic it doesn't really make a huge difference as they are all pretty much the same.

Is this your first time flying?

You know, price, convenience, and to some degree service, comfort on board factor into it.  For example, I'd hate to fly to Equador in what was once a Northwest airlines aircraft, the seat pitch being so tight that even somebody like me - 5' 10" and usually comfortable in coach - would be uncomfortable... in stark contrast, jetBlue's aircraft are much roomier, that, the color of the interior is easy on the eyes, and the TVs provide tons of entertainment.

Speaking of which, only American's 777s have in-seat TVs for everybody.  The flights within the U.S that use them are rare.

Random fact: American's 767-200s did have 1st class seats with old VHS tape players - affectionately known as "wooly mammoths" among travelers due to their sheepskin / leather upholstery - which had been in their 767s since delivery in 1984 or so, and used on their DC-10s until the 90s, MD-11s, International / Trans-Atlantic A300B4-605Rs, 767-300s as well.  I got to sit in one briefly while getting off a San Diego - JFK flight, and damn, I wish I had been in first for that flight.  SOOOOO comfy, really far back recline, reading lamps, legrests, a stocked bar for the 1st class cabin right in front of you..... the 767-200s were configured 2 - 1 - 2, with only 1 seat in the middle row for that entire cabin giving that lucky person a perfect view of the screen if I didn't want to watch what I was watching on my TV, and more legroom than any sane person would need.  /envy.

Virgin Airlines has been the best that I've flown on by far.

Yeah. That's the one I'm talking about. Virgin Airlines.
