Title: Track recent respect votes to prevent abuse?
Post by: ursus on July 31, 2011, 10:55:20 PM
I made a suggestion about a month ago regarding the respect system, and it was more or less ignored (Probably because it was too elaborate).

So I'll propose something, since there's been alot of users banned lately for mass -1ing people.

There are two options here, both of which would make it easy to track and punish respect abuse.

1. On a user's profile, let there be a section labeled "Recently voted posts". It will display the last 5-10 posts they've voted. If all of them are -1's, you know what they're up to.

2. On a user's profile, let it show the last few posts of theirs that have been voted. If they're all -1's or +1's from the same person, abuse is fairly obvious.

That is all.

I appreciate the initiative in suggesting something like this.

However, there are already systems in place that allow for tracking of +'s and -'s on the forums. So if you feel someone is harassing you by -1'ing all your posts, simply send a message to a moderator about the issue and it will get looked into. Most cases, said offending person is doing something else bad as well and gets reprimanded in the end anyway.

That said, it is possible for someone to make the case that they have been -1'ing all a person's posts simply because they flat out disagree with them about all subjects. That being the case they are free to express their opinion as much as they want.

If it is a case of harassment, I'm fairly sure the -1'ing all the posts would be in addition to some other form of harassment. But still would be a good bit of evidence of what is going on.

So your idea is indeed a good one, I just don't see the need at the moment. But keep ideas like this coming! It's very good to have new suggestions, so don't get dissuaded if they are rejected.

There's a system already in place? I wasn't aware of it.

I kind of wondered why my last suggestion exactly like this got abandoned.

I think he means the fact that you can see who +1d/-1d your posts.

I don't think there's any special "system" in place.

Xrain is just dat beast that he can tell if something is amiss with the respect system.

I think he means that if you see that your posts are getting random +1's and -1's you can report it to an admin and they can look into it.

If you have a request you can always PM me about potential abuse and I'll look into it providing enough information is provided.
