Title: Axule's first map [ttt_trenches]
Post by: Ἆxule on July 18, 2011, 02:27:24 AM
>Edit: Cable pointed out that the map I was going to previously make was already made.
Foolish me hadn't noticed that it was abottabad, and now feels stupid.

Right now I'm going to learn more about mapping while I try to come up with a new theme.

If you would like to help me come up with a theme for TTT, just post and I'll try to think of something.

And ofcourse I'll post pictures of my progress as I go, as well as asking for help on a few things if a situation appears.

As of right now though, I'll be waiting for your suggestions as well as think of some ideas.

atleast I haven't started yet.
I guess I'll go with something farther down the search...

Thanks for catching that

Edit: Oh man, it's abbotabad. I hadn't noticed
/facepalm.

I knew you were a mapper when I found that message you left on Whitehouse ; )

And thank's, I'll probably be asking a few times if I can't find an answer on video tuts.

Well, after awhile of thinking and screwing around, I came up with the idea to make a map with trenches. Seemed pretty simple and not to hard. I was wrong...

The first  map I tried, it was just crap.
The second, soon after spending an hour on it, I tested it out and quickly realized it was more of a maze than a connection of trenches, so I threw out that idea.
The map I'm working on now shows some promise, even though I haven't done much to it.

Basically the way I'm trying to make my map is to have an open space in the middle, then trenches going out of it.
Once I get the trenches outlined and everything, I'm going to make underground rooms at random. Maybe 3 or 4 at max.
To make it seem more real, I'm gonna make it a muddy/dark/dirty map.

Check List:

- Outline the trenches
- Add underground bunkers and possibly an HQ on each side.
- Add detail to the brushes (Displacement)
- Add craters
- Choose skybox
- Add props
- Configure lighting
- Add rain

*Sorry if this seems out of order, I'm making this up as I go

Right Now I've gotten the outline of the big area in the middle, though I still have to do some touches on one entrance and then add another on the other side. There on I'll be adding trenches, trying to make it not look so confusing.

I'll add more pictures as I go.

Any ideas, suggestions, and/or constructive critisizm would greatly be appreciated.

It's been a real pain trying to figure out how the paths will be. But I think I'm making it to difficult.
Anyways, I tested to see how the displacement would go before I began making this, and it looks pretty sexy man.
I can't wait until I outline this.

I like to plan my maps out on graph paper.

Like, Draw all the paths from an Arial view using a pencil and graph paper.

I think its a lot easier that way.

Easier and faster.
I'll go do that now.

Thanks

I'll have to improvise I guess with regular paper

Honestly, most TTT maps are a large maze.
Like lost temple, most of the corridors looked exactly the same.
But, I guess sometimes there are exceptions.

If you ever have an error when compiling, ask me and I will be more than glad to help.

Good luck with this map!

Well, I owe Cable many thanks for helping me out.
He sent me an idea of his, and I used it. so this is all Cable's idea. I just created it.

Original:

Recreated:

So next I'm going to start adding the walls and roof of the ground (since what you see now is underground). From there I'm going to go with Cable's idea and add even more underground routes. I think for the middle though I'll make it a teleport from one side to the other. Not so sure atm.

Anyways, again, Thank you so much Cable for the idea.

Looks cool.
Do you plan to keep it that texture though?
Maybe something that looks more like dirt or sand would be cool. Maybe even stone or something.
Adding some small displacements and stuff would make it look awesome too.

For right now I'm only using the textures to remind me what they'll be and such, though I plan on keeping the mud/dirt texture for the floor.
Once I finish making the walls, I'm gonna start making them look like actual rocks with displacement.

Is this going to be realistic map? You should totally make those ugly boxes more like circle, atleast make the edges little bit more round like. If understood what your actually mapping...

I know what you're saying. I don't know if I can make them super curvy like that, but after I find the reight textures for these, I'm going to use displacement to make it all look realistic.
Could I make displacement do that for me?

Also, should I start using displacement at the end or does it matter?

Well, if the displacements are the ground then yes, but if you are going to make like floating island kinda thing, which i meant with my picture, then you can't really use displacements. Displacements can be really only simple square brushes

I'll be using it on the ground, yes.
I'll just be using it really to make everything look more real.
and it'll be brush by brush, so it'll take up a lot of my time, but it'll look better imo in the end.
