Title: FUBAR'd laptop's HDD. Back on netbook for a while. Read for more info.
Post by: Deathie on July 16, 2011, 11:47:51 PM
Well I did something I shouldn't have, and I sort of fucked up my laptops HDD.
I know how to fix it, but my problem right now is trying to get all my files backed up without deleting all the old files off it.
Not sure how long I'll be out of commission, but I installed Ubuntu on my netbook I was using beforehand.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck with only 15GB's of HDD space.

Going to use WINE to emulate Steam, but from past experience, it'd take a while, and honestly, I don't feel like dealing with it right now.
I'm going to get TS3 running tonight though, since theres a linux client for it.
If anyone wants/has to contact me (because I feel oh-so-special), that'd be the way to do it.

I'd like to also re-emphasize I don't know how long it would take, so this is also some way of saying "I might be inactive for a while".

What I might have to end up doing is remove my HDD and backup all the files through a SATA-to-USB enclosure, sadly, I only have a IDE one.

So yeah, this is why idiots like me shouldn't be allowed to try do complex things like Dual Booting.

Also, I'm an attention whore for making this topic, because I'm so full of myself that I think people actually care. Please rape my face.

//And it's late, and I just feel like going to bed, so pretend all those grammar and spelling mistakes aren't there.

//2 - I can also continue to work on (But from scratch) the project legends OST. Theres a linux client for the program I use that is open-sourced, so I plan on using that.

Take the HDD out of the laptop and use a hubby to get the data, then format, put back into laptop and have another go

I only have 15GB's on the Netbook, which is running linux. The laptop HDD is 320GB's, but is apparently full, and won't let me re-install windows on it without reformatting.

That what I said I was going to do, but I only have one for IDE HDD's, not SATA. I'd have to get one ordered.

Hmm... When I triple booted (win7,ubuntu,OSX) i just made three partitions and I had no problems when I did that. Try using a program called gparted, see if you cant fix what you fucked up. It boots from a cd so you should be able to do it no matter how bricked your hdd is.

I know.

I didn't say I wasn't going to order one,

but it would take some time for shipping ._.

The problem I have is that the HDD is all in one huge 320GB Partition, that has an "unknown" amount of free-space. Not sure how the partition manager would help me.

What the fuck? So when you went to install linux you installed it to the same partition as windows?

I somehow installed the loader on the Windows Partition, and I told linux to install alongside windows.

I don't know. I just fucked up.

I don't even know how you could make that mistake. When you go to install ubuntu, it asks which partition to install to (and if you install to an occupied partition it should ask to format), then goes to that partition. You shouldn't have ever "installed" a loader, unless you were trying to use GRUB... and I dont know why you wouldn't just use the win7 bootloader since it works automatically.

Idk man you fucked up. I dont even know how you made such a mistake.

Not sure either. I wasn't trying to do anything complex either. WUBI didn't work, becuase apparently there was no media on /dev/diskdrive or something .-.

So I just burned a disc and followed it from there.

Actually, Sanders, you gave me an idea.

Wouldn't I be able to use the Ubuntu install disc to "try it out", then access the filesystem from there? I'd be able to copy what I need onto a external HDD.

Yeah, it worked.

Reformatting, and properly setting up partitions this time.

Hopefully it all goes smooth once I re-install Win7+Ubuntu tomorrow.

And @tomcat, Ubuntu's the only distro I'm completely familiar with.

Just why would you even put another OS on the same partition of another OS... >_>

IDK if this helps but:

how to recover you windows 7 boot loader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaXXwwEgLUE#ws)

It doesn't matter,

I already reformatted.

200GB's on my Windows 7 Partition,
70GB's in a seperate storage partition (In case I ever have to re-install win7 or ubuntu, I can just store shit in here).
50GB extended partition for Ubuntu
> 256MB /boot
> 10GB /
> 2GB Swap
> Rest for /home

So yeah, that's working out pretty well for me.
