Title: How to increase FPS while playing any game
Post by: This Guy on May 20, 2011, 03:51:19 AM
First you need a Defragmenting program: http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html (http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html) = This is one of the best defragmenter programs out there.

Then you need a program called gamebooster: http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5952&file=15&evp=dc8312b3c3f52e18c69b7584026d7aec (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=5952&file=15&evp=dc8312b3c3f52e18c69b7584026d7aec) = it basically temporarily disables not needed processes and even with your preferred settings ( It won't turn off steam or you anti-virus program ) This is highly recommended for people who have 1GB or less RAM ( This Program would only take less than 20 MB of your RAM while playing in the background )

Then another program that cleans your registries: http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm (http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm)

Install and run these programs with your preffered settings

If you have Windows 7 or vista follow these steps:

1.Open your start menu then right click on "Computer" and click properties.
2.Click Advanced system settings
3.Under the performance tab you should find 3 options, click the settings button on the box that says Performance.
4.Either check the best performance box ( This will make your PC look like windows 95 ) or check the custom box ( For people who knows how Windows 7 or Vista works)

*Also Make sure that your video card drivers are always updated either through steam or windows update

Updating your video card through steam (AMD Users only):
1.Open Steam Client
2.Click the steam tab on the upper left corner of your window
3.Click "Update AMD Video Drivers"
4.Continue the installation

Updating your video card through Windows Update (For both Nvidia and AMD users):
*Note that this will DISABLE YOUR PC TO RUN THE OS IF YOU HAVE CRACKED/A ILLEGAL COPY OF THE OS
1.Open the start menu
2.Right click Computer and click properties
3.Click "Windows Update" On the lower left corner of the window
4.Click "important updates" or "optional updates"
5.Check the box that updates your graphics card and click OK
6.Follow the instructions

*Also make sure that you have scanned for viruses because some viruses can make your PC slow

Great guide to boosting fps  Although, I don't need any boosting really. I get around 100 fps in gmod :D

Buy new pc

I have two computers:  A desktop computer with 2GB of DDR2 RAM, Athlon 64 2.4GHz processor, running Windows XP, and a Macbook Pro approaching 4 years old running Snow Leopard with the same amount of RAM, same processor speed.

The Macbook runs maps like Abstraction, cosmiclounge, and aeolus, infinitely better than the desktop.

Part of it IS, believe it or not, the operating system, and how it manages processes, and their usage of memory.  You don't necessarily need a new computer to run HL2 decently.

why you so rage to joke

Missing a joke =/= raging.

That explanation I gave was also an honest input about the problem at hand and how complicated it can be.   Comp speed, memory usage, etc invokes my comp sci side, and I go uber geeky ranty.

BTW: For those of you using Steam in OS X, remember to not use widgets, or disable them from the get go, or kill the processes after using them, as they can eat up a SHIT TON of memory.

For source games you can also right click on the game in your library, click on properties, and add -dxlevel 80 to the launch options

That sets the DirectX level to 8, which will make the game look frankly like dookie but give you some frames
