I'm aware that people with windows vista can upgrade to windows 7 with a program that Microsoft generously provided, But i'm worried if its really safe.
I've heard from some people that when they did it, it slowed their computer down a lot.
I've also heard people saying that it corrupted their files.
So what i'm asking is:
Has anyone upgraded to windows 7? If so, reassure me that its safe.
Heres the site if you're interested to read about it:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-vista-to-windows-7)
Also, Sorry about the double topic posts.
Not sure if thats bad or not?

I would say go for clean install cause it will assure 100% operation.
You should ONLY go for upgrade if you are unable to transfer files or somehow unable to reinstall programs.
You should backup your files anyways when upgrading so your better off with a clean install.

I tried to upgrade my mom's laptop to windows 7 but it said it couldn't do it so I had to clean install. But IMO clean install is the way to go.

So it all worked out fine?
Didn't get really slow or anything?

I upgraded from vista to win7, as the student discount only applied for win7 upgrades.
Like any serious overhaul like upgrading the OS you should always create a backup of your important files.
So backup your files, do the upgrade, if anything corrupts, no harm done.
My computer has been running faster and more stable since the upgrade.

Which files would you consider REALLY important.
All i have is a 10 year old 20gb external hard drive and a few flash drives ;_;

What would be prohibitively time consuming to replace?
ex: Important word documents, photos, things you created. Videos if you have the room, but if something happened you can just replace them. Game save files is another important one.

Whatever is irreplaceable.
Things like Hammer Project files and such, save, but leave out the SDK and such.
If you can download it again, don't bother saving it.

So, Upgrading is reliable?

So, Upgrading is reliable?
Microsoft is generally very good at upgrades, you can upgrade from windows 5.0 all the way through every major version to windows 7 with not too much problem.
So it's just as reliable as anything else. But just remember to back-up your files.

Is it possible for the upgrade to fuck up and i end up with half of an OS?

Just as it's possible for your house to burn down.
Besides, it keeps the old windows install in a "windows old" folder.

I thought that was only if you Master restored your PC.
I've master restored it before. Twice actually.
If this is a clean install, Are you sure that will even be there?

When I reformatted, I installed a vanilla copy of windows vista, then upgraded to win7.
It left all of the windows vista files in a folder called windows.old

I did not upgrade to windows 7, i gave it a rating of 2 out of 5, sure it looks cool and all, but it does not fit my personal needs in office work.
