Innovation is a precarious proposition; at times rewarded handsomely and at others dispelled without a second thought. This is one of those ‘others’ situations. According to reports surfacing today, EA has stopped development on Mirror’s Edge 2.
The publisher was shown a working prototype by DICE and subsequently declined to move forward with the sequel. The dev team that had been working on the Mirror’s Edge follow up has now been shifted to other projects.
Late last year, EA boss Frank Gibeau commented on the lackluster reception garnered by the original game: “There were issues with the learning curve, the difficulty, the narrative, and then there was no multiplayer either.”
So how does this news break for YOU? Was Mirror’s Edge 2 a sequel that could have properly executed the unique (but admittedly flawed) first attempt or a pointless follow up to a game that never lived up to its potential? Hit us back in the comments and tell us which and why!
I reary sad bro.
Mirror's Edge was one of my favorite games.
I think the situation with ME is pretty simple. EA tried to do something different and innovative, and the mainstream market responded with "NO THANKS, WE'D RATHER HAVE YET ANOTHER WWII FPS". Activision sells X million units of COD WAW, while ME races to $19.99 and still can't sell at that price. Why continue at that point?Let this be a lesson to all about why publishers keep pumping out the same shit every year; BECAUSE IT SELLS. Only hardcore gamers want innovation, and they are a much smaller market.

Just more EA shit :l

We need a publisher who will let devs develop a game if THEY(The devs) want to, NOT the publishers :l

WAAAH EA SENSELESSLY STOPPING SOMETHING
Don't be dumb.
It sold 100.000 copies, of course they're not going to risk making a sequel.
-
i am not surprised.

You do realize Dead Space did worse, right?
And that was opening month. They hae about a million now and developed a massive fanbase.

Uhm ...
Dead Space sold over 2 million times ...
And the opening month of ME was 30.000 copies. It did just about reach one million though, you're right.
ME was a financial disaster for EA and there was no reason at all for them to continue an unsuccessful IP.
See it this way:
You are a publisher.
You got the choice between a boring, generic CoD clone that will sell 8M+ or an innovative game that'll sell a maximum of 1M, leaving you without any profit.
Blame today's gamers, not today's publishers.

Who the fuck pays 1m to get tools to develop a game?

Games aren't developed in barely-lit basements by a bunch of nerds anymore, you know.

"EA has told CVG that not only is DICE's Mirror's Edge franchise very much still alive - but that it is "figuring out a way to bring it back"."

How the fuck does it cost upwards of a million dollars to make a video game? Aside from marketing, of course...

I think you have to keep in mind the team that's making Mirror's Edge. Their production quality is still that of Bad company 2.

That doesn't answer anything.

Cost of software and resources, plus having the money to have an even paycheck for the 100+ staff for two years that the game is in development.

I can understand the paychecks, but don't they use programs to make the video games? Surely, the programs aren't that expensive...
And the disks must be a few cents a piece... right?
-
Hopefully Madden 12 won't be complete shit.

They have to legally obtain the liscence.
For all the software, it'd be close to 2000$ per computer.

I'm beginning to see how it would cost around $100,000, but I highly doubt it costs that much to get the license.

They don't have anything else to work on, plus the achievement in Portal 2 -"The missing shipment"- leads me on to think it is EP3 next.... FTW

Has Valve ever released anything with 3?
Team Fortress 2
Half Life 2: Episode 1/2

Unless we're expecting Counter-Strike Source 2 next.
