Title: Fault in Windows Vista update? Halp
Post by: Cable on February 28, 2011, 05:31:01 PM
So i turned my PC on today and I got the screen "Finishing update's %##". It took about 2 minutes and it was done... But now i have the Windows Classic theme and i cant change it. I've gone to the settings and tried to switch it back to Vista theme but it does nothing.
Nothing else is wrong, I just hate the look of Windows Classic.
What should I do?

Yeah, if the theme is selectable but doesn't apply, maybe you need to reinstall your graphics drivers.

Be sure to clear out old ones first through at least uninstall and restart.

Get latest ones from manufacturer such as nvidia.com or amd.com (for ati)

Check Service.
Ctrl+Esc -> Service -> Themes

Make it "Running"

Easiest way I guess to update drivers.

Download this. http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-266.58-whql-driver.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-266.58-whql-driver.html)
1.Put the download on desktop.
2.Get to device manager, and expand Display adapters.
3.Find your card model, right click it, and click uninstall. (Check the box remove drivers.)
4.When done restart computer.
5.After reboot install the new driver that you downloaded.
6.Restart Again.

That should be it. You should also see some performance increase and what not. If you haven't updated in awhile.

They already did. The only game that still supports it is HL2. CSS, GMOD, ect only support DX8+ now.

Ya at this point I would ask for more info such as: what updates were installed, and what happened before the computer restarted ( any app updates, smacking your computer, registry cleans, etc. )

Oh ya. Try this one.
Get into cmd as admin.
And run the command. sfc /scannow
That will scan all system files and restore any corrupt or replaced.
Try it.

>Vista

Draw a pentagram on the ground in bright red paint. Light a small torch on each point. Lay your computer down in the center, on  it's side. Get a knife, and get one of your tears on the knife. Stab the computer as hard as you can, dead center.

This solution works for all computers with Vista.

oo nice suggestion, I was thinking it might be something to do with a corrupt theme dll from an update say if you used a custom (non winderz) theme

+9001 for peetah, simple, fast, non intrusive feex
